Tanja Bogumil is the CEO of Perfeggt, which is focused on plant-based products. In recent times, interested individuals might have heard of Bogumil's name because Perfeggt has managed to raise a fair amount of funding.
1. Her Maternal Family Is Involved in Small-Scale Farming
There was a time when the overwhelming majority of the population was involved in farming. After all, food is one of the most fundamental needs, meaning that other roles couldn't exist without the food surplus needed to sustain them. Nowadays, continuous improvements in food production mean that we are fine even though most of us are no longer involved in farming. As such, Bogumil stands out in that her mother's side of the family is involved in small-scale farming.
2. Had an Awareness of Where Food Came From At a Young Age
This meant that Bogumil had an awareness of where food came from at a young age. Something that can't be said for a good portion of the population in developed countries. Simply put, most of us are extremely disconnected from food production, with the result that we have to go out of our way to get a better understanding of where our food comes from.
3. Visited a Slaughterhouse At the Age of 12
Speaking of which, this included an awareness of where meat came from. As the story goes, Bogumil's uncle took her to a slaughterhouse at the age of 12 to show her the issues with the sausages that she ate. She didn't quite understand everything that was going around her at that point in her life. However, she felt that it wasn't right, so much so that she turned vegetarian from that point forward. Considering how a lot of slaughterhouses function, this is perhaps unsurprising.
4. Based in the European Union
Currently, Bogumil is based in the European Union. To be exact, she is based out of Berlin, which makes sense because said city is one of the most important tech hubs that can be found in the region. There are a number of factors responsible for this. For example, its central location plus its position on transportation networks make it accessible in a way with which most cities cannot hope to compete. Similarly, it is home to a lot of people with a lot of talent, which is critical for companies that are reliant on human capital. On top of this, Berlin has institutions as well as other structures to support innovative companies, thus making it that much easier for them to flourish.
5. Spent Some Time in India
Unsurprisingly, Bogumil got her education in Germany. However, she has apparently spent some time studying in North India as well. There, Bogumil took the time to do the Kanchenjunga trail. This is impressive because Kanchenjunga is one of the mountains that make up the Himalayas. In fact, it was once considered the highest mountain in the entire world until the Great Trigonometrical Survey discovered that Mount Everest was higher in 1849. Even now, Kanchenjunga can claim the position of being the third highest mountain in the entire world.
6. Extremely Interested in Entrepreneurship
Bogumil has made it very clear that she is extremely interested in entrepreneurship. After all, Perfeggt isn't the first time that she has been involved in founding a company. For that matter, Bogumil has stated that she would rather be an entrepreneur than be anything else in the entire world, which is a claim that speaks volumes about her interests.
Speaking of which, Bogumil has said that she is a foodie. People taking an interest in food isn't exactly a new phenomenon by any reasonable standard. After all, we have numerous ancient texts that mention the resources spent on luxurious food by ancient gourmands. However, foodie itself is a relatively new term, having started seeing use in the early 1980s. Moreover, the movement itself has certain connotations of accessibility as well as interest in authenticity that enable it to stand out to some extent from its predecessors, though these may or may not be applicable in every single case.
8. Interested in Sustainable Food Production
In any case, Bogumil is interested in sustainable food production, which is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. Essentially, producing enough food for everyone and making sure that enough food reaches everyone remain important questions for the foreseeable future. This is particularly true because climate change is happening, meaning that food production is expected to see disruptions of various sorts in the times to come. As such, sustainable food production is critical for a number of reasons. For example, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is needed to reduce the extent of climate change. Similarly, there is a need to smooth over potential disruptions as much as possible under the circumstances that are expected. In other words, sustainable food production is a continuation of the same old problem that we have been dealing with since the start of the human experience, though with a much-changed face for a much-changed world.
9. Interested in Making a Plant-Based Alternative to Eggs
Based on the name, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that Perfeggt is starting out with a plant-based egg alternative. Plant-based alternatives for meat show that there is potential for such products, which is why a number of companies are looking into this particular market. However, Bogumil believes that there is still plenty of room for growth, not least because more than 1.3 trillion eggs are produced on an annual basis.
10. Her Product Is Made Out of Fava Beans
Bogumil's first Perfeggt product is made out of fava beans, which are produced in massive quantities for human consumption throughout the world. Unsurprisingly, a lot of research went into it, not least because her company needed to make sure that the product resembled eggs in taste, in mouthfeel, and in other sensory characteristics. Otherwise, people would have less incentive to make the switch.
