10 Things You Didn’t Know about Yankees Owner Hal Steinbrenner

hal steinbrenner

Who is Hal Steinbrenner? If you’re an avid sports fan, then you probably already know the answer to this question. Just in case you don’t, here are ten things you might like to know about the current owner of the New York Yankees.

1. He actually obtained ownership through his inheritance

Ownership of the team is not something that he originally had. As a matter of fact, his father was the one that owned the team for a number of years. It wasn’t until after his death that his son Hal Steinbrenner took over. It was part of his inheritance, but there was also much more involved with it, all of which will be discussed in later paragraphs throughout this article.

2. He’s now owned the team for almost a decade

Although it may not seem like it, he has been the owner of the team for just a year shy of an entire decade. When you really stop and think about it, it’s rather amazing how fast time passes. As far as his role is concerned, time probably hasn’t passed nearly as quickly, as owning a major team like the Yankees can’t possibly be an easy task to accomplish, especially with all of the added pressure of running a successful team that has easily become one of the most popular ones in the entire country.

3. He doesn’t just own the team

To further complicate things, he does much more than just own the team. While it’s true that some people do own a professional sports team and they do little else, only showing up from major events, that isn’t the case here. In fact, Steinbrenner actually serves as a general manager of the team as well. That means that he is involved in day-to-day operations, and he’s there for each and every meeting and event that takes place. This is definitely not something where he only shows up once or twice a year for a few minutes at a time.

4. He’s not the oldest son

Some people might find it rather interesting that he inherited the team, as he is actually the younger son of the family, not the oldest. However, as you continue reading through these 10 interesting points about Steinbrenner, it might become easier to understand why he ultimately inherited the team even though things of this nature would typically go to the eldest son.

5. He’s not even the only sibling

It’s also worth mentioning that it has two other siblings, both sisters. It’s not immediately known what role they play in the team, if any. It’s also not known if they had any interest in having a more significant role or if they were given the opportunity. Whatever the case might be, it is known that Hal Steinbrenner is the one that eventually took over the team through his inheritance and he has worked very hard at it since.

6. He’s also an entrepreneur

You might think that this is the only thing he’s involved in, especially when you consider that he also serves as the general manager, as previously mentioned. After all, this is something that takes an enormous amount of time, far more than the typical 40 hours that someone who works for a company on a full-time basis would spend in a single week, would spend working. Despite that fact, he has always been an entrepreneur at his core, and that isn’t something that has changed in the nine years that he’s been in charge of the Yankees team. As a matter of fact, he still works routinely at developing new business ventures and he is equally involved with each of them.

7. He makes a lot of money

Clearly, he is a very successful entrepreneur, as he is worth more than three billion dollars. It’s hard to even fathom how anyone can make that much money in a lifetime, much less in the finite amount of time that he’s had to do exactly that. Granted, part of that money comes from running the team but not all of it. You might even be surprised to know that for the most part, it is actually his other business ventures that fund portions of activities for the team, not necessarily the other way around.

8. He helped his father with daily operations before his death

Before his father passed away, his health began to decline a great deal. This meant that although he was still technically in charge of running the team, he wasn’t physically able to keep up with the demands created by that position. This is when his son stepped in to help, basically taking over those daily operations a little at a time as his father’s health grew worse and worse. This is largely why he was eventually given the reigns to take over the team once his father passed. He had already been working with him each day and he knew what running the team entailed.

9. He was voted in as head of the team after his father died

Clearly, those who were in the know were impressed by his actions while he was working with his father. As a result, virtually everyone involved with the decision-making process were more than willing to “vote” Steinbrenner in as the general manager, in addition to his owning the team.

10. He is also a pilot

He has been an avid pilot for several years. Currently, he flies a Cessna, one of the most popular aircraft in the world. Flying is something that he initially took up because it was beneficial for business, allowing him to get wherever he needed to be in a timely fashion. As he progressed through the steps to acquire his pilot’s license, he discovered that he really loved flying just for the sake of doing it. He has been an ardent supporter of general aviation since then.
