He then completed two years of National Service before moving to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

For the first few years of Hopkins’ acting career, he predominantly worked in theater. He did not appear in a film until 1964, when he made his film debut in ‘Changes’. Although he had some television roles after this film, he continued to work in theater. His big break came when he landed the role of Richard the Lionheart in the 1968 film ‘The Lion in Winter’. This led to him gradually moving away from theater to concentrate on his film and television career.

During the early 1970s, he began to make a name for himself in television when he landed major roles in British television films. He became associated with Richard Attenborough after starring in several films directed by him. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he starred in films including ‘Magic’, ‘The Elephant Man’, ‘A Change of Seasons’, ‘The Bounty, and ‘’Bram Stoker’s Dracula’. During the 1980s, he also resumed his career as a theater actor.

His Career from 1990 to 2010

The 1990s was the most successful decade in Anthony Hopkins’ career. He starred in the 1993 film ‘The Remains of the Day’ with Emma Thompson, and he received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for his performance. In the same year, he played his next major role, which was portraying C.S. Lewis in the film ‘Shadowlands’. Other films starring Hopkins from this decade are ‘Legends of the Fall’, ‘The Edge’, ‘The Mask of Zorro’, ‘Meet Joe Black’. It was also during the 1990s that Hopkins began playing the role for which he is best known. He starred as the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 movie ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ opposite Jodie Foster. Although there has since been another film featuring this character, Hopkins made the decision to make Red Dragon the last film in which he appeared as this character.

Since 2010, Hopkins has starred in 19 films, including playing Odin in all three films in the ‘Thor’ series of films, including ‘Thor’, ‘Thor: The Dark World’, and ‘Thor: Ragnorak’. Most recently, he has played Pope Benedict XVI in the 2019 film ‘The Two Popes’ and Anthony in the 2020 film ‘The Father. Although he is now in his early 80s, Anthony Hopkins continues to act, and he has expressed no desire to retire from his career in the entertainment industry.

He later returned to the United States in the 1990s at the height of his acting career, so he has dual citizenship. Currently, he lives in Malibu, California. Hopkins has always been open about the fact that he is a recovering alcoholic. He gave up drinking just after Christmas in 1975, and he has remained sober since.
