10 Reasons to Visit Buckner Mansion in New Orleans
If you are about to make a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana, you probably want to know a thing or two about some of the best places to visit. After all, there is certainly no shortage of places that you can go, and almost all of these places are unlike anything that you will ever experience in any other location.
Unless you have almost unlimited time and resources, that can make it difficult to decide which places you should visit and which ones you might be better off bypassing. One of the places that you absolutely have to visit is Buckner Mansion, located in one of the most beautiful areas of the entire city. Here are 10 reasons why you should visit.
1. It’s one of the most photographed houses in the entire state
People have always had a habit of taking pictures of this house, but it’s become so popular that the groups come in at almost every time of day and night. Some people may not be too fond of this type of situation, but it’s a great way to meet some new people and talk about the house. Who knows, you might end up making some new friendships that will last a lifetime.
2. It’s in one of the most beautiful districts in the city
The house is in the exclusive Garden District. This is one of the most beautiful (and expensive) neighborhoods in the entire city. Aside from the amazing architecture of this particular house, there are also several other houses in the area that rival its beauty with relative ease. In addition, there are loads of tall, majestic trees and plenty of flowers and other greenery in the neighborhood. It’s absolutely stunning to look at and it creates a atmosphere all its own
3. It served as the subject for a popular television show
The house is easily recognizable as the school for witches used in “American Horror Story.” It made appearances in both seasons three and eight. Most people that aren’t familiar with the area will recognize the house as Miss Robichaux’s school for the gifted, in other words, a school for witches. It’s interesting to note that the house really did serve as a school for a number of years, but it was a business school, not a school that taught magic potions and spells.
4. You can rent it for the night
If you’re so inclined, you can rent the house for a night. Maybe you’re having a big event and you want the house all to yourself throughout the entire night. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to stay in a house like this and it would be a dream come true to have it all to yourself and just a few of your closest friends for an entire night.
Whatever the reason might be, the current owners of the house routinely rent it out. It’s not cheap, but if you’ve got the money, then you can have the house and basically any type of event that you want to have there.
5. You can even stay for a whole month
It’s true, you can even rent the house out for an entire month if that’s what you want to do. Most people only rent it for a single night because it is very pricey. Even though the owners give a slight discount for renting it by the month, it’s just not feasible for most people.
That said, it would definitely be a memorable month, to say the least. Who knows, if you were an especially good tenant and you were on time with all of your payments, they might even let you rent the house for two or even three consecutive months at a time. One thing is certain, you would be living in a house that is among the most popular and storied in all of Louisiana, even if it is only for a couple of months.
6. It’s great for people who like haunted houses
The house is said to be haunted by a former slave who stayed there for quite some time, known only as Miss Josephine. Supposedly, people have actually seen her ghost. They also claim that they hear unexpected noises and that lights turn themselves on and off when no one is around.
Many people have even claimed that they hear doors opening and closing when they know they are the only ones in the house. Apparently, she had an affinity for lemons and it’s not uncommon to suddenly smell lemons when there aren’t any actual lemons to be found anywhere around the place.
7. It has tons of history behind it
This house was built in the 1890s. Of course there is a lot of history behind it. At more than 100 years old, it has been a private residence, a school and a tourist attraction, on top of becoming one of the more famous houses in Louisiana. Its original owner built it because he wanted it to be the biggest, grandest house in the entire state.
He wanted it to be bigger and better than any of the houses owned by his co-workers. After that, it became one of the most prestigious business schools in the entire country, and remained so for some 50 years before the school closed in the late 1980s. Eventually it became privately owned again. This time to be rented out for special events or for someone to stay in.
8. You can rent it out for special occasions
As previously mentioned, the house can be rented out for special occasions. While you can certainly stay there overnight if you choose to, you don’t have to. Some people rent it out for just a few hours while others decide to stay a bit longer.
9. It’s really big
The house is several stories tall and more than 20,000 square feet. It’s easy to get lost if you don’t already know where you’re going. It’s also one of the most stunning examples of architecture you will see anywhere in the United States.
10. It’s stunningly beautiful
Perhaps the most important reason that you should visit it is because it’s absolutely beautiful. The house is simply stunning, inside and out. If you love architecture or you merely have a fondness for large houses that have a solid history behind them, this is a place that you simply have to see for yourself.
