10 Things You Didn’t Know about Cleveland Indians Owner Larry Dolan
If you’re a sports fan, you probably try to keep up with people that are involved. Maybe you have a favorite team such as the Cleveland Indians. In that particular case, you might want to know more about the owner of the team, Larry Dolan. More often than not, people don’t really get a chance to know very much about the person that owns a team. That’s because the focus is usually on the players and the coaching staff. With that being said, it’s always nice to know more about everybody that’s involved with your team, so here are 10 things that you might not already know about the owner of the Cleveland Indians, Larry Dolan.
1. He’s actually from Cleveland
Well, it’s close, anyway. He was actually born in Cleveland Heights, in 1931. The interesting thing here is that you have an owner of a team that actually has roots near where the team is based. This isn’t something that always happens. In fact, it’s relatively rare. Fans have a tendency to get behind owners like Dolan that have more of a personal history associated with the team, largely because they feel like these individuals understand what the team culture is all about better than an outsider would.
2. He went to college at Notre Dame
He actually graduated from Notre Dame in 1956 with a degree in law. Obviously, he’s no stranger to hard work and he knows what it takes to get the job done even when there are many challenges along the way.
3. He used to be an attorney
For much of his life, he spent his time defending other individuals as an attorney. By all accounts, he was a very successful attorney and that allowed him to explore other interests in his life, as well.
4. He’s now retired
After he retired from his work in the legal field, he decided it was time to pursue other interests. Not one to sit around without anything to do, he made the decision to purchase the Cleveland Indians and become the principal owner. He’s never looked back and it seems like most fans are just as happy that he owns the team as he is himself.
5. He’s always had a love for sports
Most people that love sports play it in high school or college and are then relegated to watching it on television. It’s not really that often that someone gets to take their love for for a particular sport to the next level, but that’s exactly what Dolan did when he bought the Cleveland Indians.
6. He is also a retired United States Marine
After he graduated from college, he decided to enlist in the Marines and remain there for two years before becoming a prosecuting attorney. In fact, he largely credits his experience in the Marine Corps with giving him the values he still holds dear today.
7. He’s a father
In fact, he has six children of his own. He’s worked hard to instill the same values in them that he grew up with, all in the hopes that they will go on to lead productive lives that leave a positive impact on the world in their own rite.
8. He’s always been a family man
One of the things that is most important to Dolan is being there for those that are close to him. Unlike many individuals, he realizes that the most important thing is to be there for his family first and put most other things, even his career, second.
9. He’s a self-made man
Dolan wasn’t really handed anything in life. He was brought up with exceptional values and he was taught how to make a way for himself as an adult. Therefore, he’s earned everything that he has on his own, through hard work, perseverance and dedication. As previously mentioned, he’s teaching his own children those same values.
10. He has different views when it comes to paying Sports celebrities
Sports stars make more money than just about anybody in the United States. Dolan has come under some fire because he doesn’t necessarily agree with that assumption and he pays his players less than a lot of other teams. Some people have criticized him for doing this but he’s quick to point out that there are people such as military and first responders who put their lives on the line every day and only make a fraction of what most people make to go play a baseball game. He’s one of the few people in the business that are working to change this.
