10 Things You Didn’t Know about Humana CEO Bruce Broussard

Bruce Broussard is Humana’s CEO and President. He was appointed to the position of leadership pin 2011. Since that time, he has worked hard to apply his unique skills to develop an integrated system of care that improves the quality of health care for patients, while lowering the costs. His model has earned the bright executive well-deserved recognition and respect in the industry. Under his leadership, Humana has emerged to become one of the leaders in the field. His reputation precedes him, and most of us are aware of his contributions, but what else is there to know about him? It might surprise you, so here are 10 things you didn’t know about Bruce Broussard.

1. He believes that health care goes beyond the doctor’s office

You don’t often hear healthcare industry executives talking about personal issues affecting patients/clients, but Bruce Broussard does. He is emphatic about the need to assist people who have meager finances, little food and those who are lonely. He very openly shared that more needs to be done for those who are struggling in these areas to supplement the care that they receive at their doctor’s visit. He suggests that Humana may be able to devise a cooperative agreement plan to address these areas because of their impact on physical and emotional health.

2. He’s challenged, yet rewarded by his work

Broussard chared that he took an interest in health care because it affects so many, and it’s one of society’s biggest challenges. Being a part of the solution, or at least having the opportunity to take a shot at it, for Bruce, is very rewarding. His goal is to simplify the healthcare experience while improving the health of clients at the same time. So far, his innovations have been greatly effective.

3. He went to college in Texas

Bruce Broussard earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University where he majored in business. He went on to pursue a Master of Business Administration in the same state. His Master’s was earned at the University of Houston

4. He’s a CPA

Broussard is a certified public accountant. It’s no small feat to pass the stringent exams that are required for certification. He’s been in the field of healthcare for his entire career. In 1990, he worked as the Treasurer and Vice President of Continental Medical Systems.

5. He doubled his income in one year

Bruce Broussard went from a compensation package of $10.3 million in 2015 to a whopping $19.7 million in 2016. His base salary for 2016 was $1.24 million but Humana gave him a boatload of extras on top of his salary. These include personal use of the business aircraft, retirement, life insurance and so forth.

6. A family emergency turned Bruce into a caregiver

It’s no small wonder that Bruce Broussard has such a heart for the plight of the people in need of special healthcare assistance. It wasn’t that long ago that he found out first hand how quickly life can change when an emergency situation occurs. His wife had symptoms of the flu but within 24 hours, she was in the emergency room of the hospital battling a potentially life-threatening illness. Bruce found how difficult it can be to juggle 2 pre-adolescent children, a home, a demanding job and still be there for a very ill spouse. He had the help of his sister-in-law, but it was still a hard experience to endure. Thankfully, his wife made a full recovery quickly.

7. He’s an honored alumn with distinction from his alma mater

Texas A&M honored Bruce Broussard in 1984 for the significant contributions he’s made as a philanthropist. He was recognized for his passion to improve the workplace, the economy, and the environment. He’s one of those guys that has a keen awareness of how precarious human life is teetering in many aspects, and he is active in doing what he can to help tip the scales in our favor in a variety of different ways.

8. He looks out for the well being of Humana’s employees

Broussard is in a position of authority. One of his goals is to make the workplace a healthy and enjoyable experience for employees, He regularly encourages them to use work arrangements that are flexible so they can take care of responsibilities in their personal lives as well as on the job. It’s rare that you find this attitude in someone who has accomplished so much in his lifetime. We think he’s on to something here.

9. He’s a family man at heart

Bruce Broussard is not only successful in business, he’s also a happily married man with two kids. He’s married to Janine Broussard. She is a former nurse, who worked in the operating room. Their children are ages 18 and 14. He was honored for his ability to balance family life, philanthropy, and a busy career when he received his award from Texas A&M.

10. He’s in love with the great outdoors

Broussard is a Texan at the core of his being, although he’s lived at multiple locations throughout the U.S. He has a passion for all types of outdoor activities including cycling, saltwater fishing, and other fun that he can include his family in. He’s a swell guy that deserves
