Buying a suit is a lot of fun. It goes without saying that a well-fitted suit can instantly elevate your appearance. It can help make you feel confident as well as look your best – when do you ever look at someone in a suit and not feel impressed?

The best thing about a suit is that there are different types for different occasions. You have your wedding suits, your classic suit, your summer suit and as well as a tuxedo suit – which quickly make you feel like James Bond. But, because there are so many options, there are some considerations that you should make before you buy your suit. Very rarely, is the first suit you see going to be the one you walk away with.

Below, we have put together a brief guide on three considerations when buying a suit. From considering the occasions and setting a realistic budget to choosing the right fabric and color, there are plenty of things to think about.

Consider the occasion

When starting your search for a suit, a good place to start is the occasions, as this will help you narrow down the type of suit. For example, a summer wedding may mean you opt for a lighter and thinner suit, whereas if this suit is for work, you may want a classic, dark style suit. If you’re looking for a suit that can be worn across a variety of occasions, a classic navy or charcoal suit is often the safest choice.

Choosing the right color

The color of your suit can have a big impact on both its versatility and how formal it appears. If this is your first suit, it’s usually best to stick with timeless shades such as navy, charcoal or grey, as these colors can be worn for a wide range of occasions. Lighter colors, such as beige or light blue, are excellent choices for summer events and destination weddings, while black is generally reserved for formal evening occasions. If you know you are going to be wearing this suit for a lot of occasions, choose one that it timeless, no matter the occasion.

Setting a realistic budget

Before you start shopping, it’s important to set a realistic budget. Suits are available at a wide range of price points, from affordable high-street options to luxury designer pieces, so knowing how much you’re willing to spend can help narrow down your search. Remember to factor in the cost of alterations, as even a relatively inexpensive suit can look significantly more expensive when tailored properly. Remember, don’t shop solely on brand, as some more affordable brands can have a better fit and look better on you – it’s not always about the label.
