10 Things You Didn’t Know About Dominion Energy CEO Thomas F. Farrell II

It takes a special individual to lead a large and dynamic energy company. Thomas F. Farrell II is the CEO of Dominion Energy and he’s had an interesting history and career that has led him to this point in his life. 1. He’s been with Dominion Resources for more than a decade

Mr. Farrell has been with the company as their CEO for less than a year but he’s certainly not new to the business. He first joined the company in 2004 and was hired to be the Executive Vice President of the company. In 2005, he was promoted to the President and Chief Operating Officer of the company and in 2007 he was elected as the Chairman of the board. He recently took the reigns of the company as their CEO. He’s ranked as number 30 in best CEOs within the Utilities industry.

2. He was educated in Virginia

Farrell enrolled in classes at the University of Virginia. It was there that he earned his bachelors of science degree in 1976. He continued with the same university to attend graduate school where he earned his JD in 1979. He’s a highly educated professional with a higher degree than most executives in similar positions within the energy industry.

3. His expertise is highly valued

Thomas Farrell II has the knowledge and expertise that makes him highly valued as an adviser within the utilities industry and beyond. He serves in a variety of directorships, memberships and trusteeships on other boards including the Associated Electric and Gas Insurance Services Limited, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, and Edison Electric Institute. His involvement in these organizations also keeps him on top of the news and trends which develop within the industry.

4. Thomas is civic minded

In addition to his involvement with boards pertaining to the energy industry, he’s also involved in a variety of civic and cultural organizations. He sits on the board of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, the Richmond Performing Arts Center LLP, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

5. He’s not your average CEO

Thomas Farrell is the leader of a Fortune 500 company that rings in revenues of more than $13 billion annually. The company operates with over 15,000 employees and it is located within more than a dozen states within the nation. Farrell runs Dominion Resources and he stays in motion. He’s not a sedentary leader, but rather one that is always on the move.

6. People wonder when he finds the time to sleep

With everything that Tom Farrell has on his plate the people who know him wonder when he can find the time to rest and sleep. He’s on multiple boards and is always doing something interesting or in the best interests of the company or the communities that he serves. The one thing that he friends not about the executive is that he’s always finding the time to incorporate new things into his busy schedule.

7. He’s a writer and producer

Here is a fun fact about Thomas Farrell II that many people are not aware of. There’s more to him than the busy executive business leader and adviser. He also loves Civil War dramas and he has actually co written and produced a film. It’s a drama about the Civil War that is titled, “Field of Lost Shoes.” He even has a cameo role in the film that will be released in theaters.

8. He’s a football fan too

If you keep your eyes peeled you’re likely to see him attending the Virginia’s home football games. He allows himself this simple indulgence when they’re playing the home field on Saturdays. He’s a regular guy that happens to like sports and he does carve out a small niche in his busy schedule to enjoy an occasional game.

9. We could all learn from him

Farrell does in a week what would seem impossible to the average person. He’s well organized and he knows how to manage his time. Much like a true and effective leader. He still finds time to do the things that he enjoys while fulfilling all his responsibilities.

10. He’s a rare individual

There are many top executives who are organized like Thomas Farrell II, but he’s somewhat of a rarity. Now that you know a little bit more about his leadership duties, the things that he chooses to be a part of and the way that he approaches life, it’s rare to find a person who is so well-rounded and balanced in the way that he goes about his personal and professional life and he seems to do it so well. We imagine that he could write a best selling book on task juggling and staying sane in the process.
