How Erin Burnett Achieved a Net Worth of $13 Million

Erin Burnett is a news anchor who has had a fair amount of success on American news shows. For proof, consider the fact that she has her own news show at the moment, which would be Erin Burnett Outfront on CNN. As such, it should come as no surprise to learn that while there is a fair amount of variation when it comes to estimates of Burnett's current net worth, said figures tend to hover around $12 million or still higher.

How Did Erin Burnett Reach Her Current Net Worth?

For those who are curious, Burnett was born and raised in a place called Mardela Springs, which can be found in the state of Maryland. Eventually, she went to Williams College, where she proceeded to study political science as well as economics. Due to this, Burnett winded up graduating from Williams College with a degree in political economy. In the past, political economy could be considered a scaled-up version of economics because it was concerned with similar issues on the state level whereas economics was limited to individual consumers and individual businesses. However, that particular meaning has become obsolete because of how the meaning of economics has changed over time, with the result that what was once political economy is now macroeconomics. As such, political economy in modern times tends to be much more focused on the interactions between politics and economics, meaning that it draws upon different fields of knowledge to produce useful and otherwise interesting insights.

Regardless, it is clear that Burnett didn't set out to become a journalist from the very start. In fact, after she had graduated from Williams College, she actually got a job as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs, which is a very different line of work from her current career to say the least. It wasn't until later that Burnett managed to get an invitation to work as a booker as well as a writer for CNN's Moneyline, which resulted in her delving deeper and deeper into journalism.

For instance, there was a time when Burnett worked as the Vice President of CitiMedia, which would be CitiGroup's digital media group. After that, she went to Bloomberg Television, where she winded up becoming an anchor as well as the stocks editor. Soon enough, Burnett made a move over to CNBC, where she didn't just host Street Signs but also co-hosted Squawk on the Street with Mark Haines. It wasn't until 2011 that Burnett made another jump over to CNBC rival CNN, where she continues to host Erin Burnett Outfront in the present time.

Subject-wise, Burnett is known by a lot of people because of her coverage of financial news. Something that is wholly unsurprising because of her previous career in the financial industry, which has enabled her to back up her journalism in this regard with personal expertise and experience. With that said, this is actually something that has caused some individuals to direct criticism at Burnett because of the perception of bias in her reporting because of her connections with the financial industry. For an excellent example, there was a Glenn Greenwald article in Salon that criticized perceived bias in her reporting that seems to have been motivated by Burnett choosing to mock the Occupy Wall Street movement that fizzled out in the early 2010s.

Besides this, it is interesting to note that Burnett's time covering financial news saw her doing so in a wide range of places in a wide range of countries. Some examples of the countries from which she covered the news included but were not limited to China, Egypt, and India. However, when it comes to the most stand-out moments, there are two that warrant further mention. One was the time when Burnett covered the Egyptian revolution in Cairo, which brought her a fair amount of prominence because of the stakes involved with said event. The other was when Burnett conducted an investigation of a Transammonia-owned subsidiary situated in Switzerland, which was apparently buying ammonia from Iran. Her reporting caused Transammonia to send a press release to the leaders of the U.S. Congress that its subsidiary would be winding down its business interactions with Iran as soon as possible while avoiding any further business interactions with entities in said country. Burnett didn't get an Emmy for that particular piece of journalistic work, but she did manage to get a nomination at least. Something that serves as an excellent reminder of how journalism can affect the world.

In any case, Burnett's success as a journalist has provided her with a lot of prestige, which in turn, means a lot of money. Currently, it has been said that she earns $3 million on an annual basis at CNN, which explains why there are so many estimates of her current net worth being $13 million and up. Moreover, it is interesting to note that Burnett's contract actually calls for a prime time show, which more or less ensures her continuing prominence unless she is willing to take a sum of money in exchange for moving her current show to some other time slot.

Further Considerations

Based on this, it seems safe to say that Burnett's current net worth will continue to rise in the times to come. After all, she gets paid a salary for her work with CNN, meaning that she has a pretty steady revenue stream coming in. Moreover, Burnett's career still seems to be going strong, meaning that her earning numbers shouldn't be flagging anytime soon. With that said, one can't help but wonder whether she will become involved with other projects in the times to come as well. In the past, she has been on The Apprentice, which was in addition to her involvement in the making of various documentaries. As a result, it isn't exactly unreasonable to say that she could wind up doing more such projects in the future.
