His early life
Ivan was born in the Czech Republic in the Ostrava, Moravian-Silesian area. His mother and father were both Czechoslovakian champions with his mother achieving the rank of number two female player in the entire country. He came by both his love of tennis and his high skills honestly. He played as a youth and participated at both Wimbledon and the French Open and established himself as the number one junior player in the world at the competitive matches becoming internationally recognized. They moved on to become runners up for the 1984 and 1985 matches. Lendl lost his posturing with the Czech Tennis Association when he immigrated to the United States in 1986, and they viewed his move as “illegal defection.” Ivan enjoyed a 44 game winning streak before leaving the Czech Tennis circuit. He made his home in Greenwich, Connecticut and played in the World Championship Tennis tour, winning each of the ten tournaments he participated in, also defeating John McEnroe on several occasions and also beating him at the Masters Grand Prix. Because of all his victories, Ivan Lendl became the single highest-paid tennis player ever. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001.

His salary for 1993 was over a million dollars, and closer to two million in 1992. We could surmise that having professional parents who exceeded at playing the game was a factor, which it probably was. His constant exposure to the game was no doubt a big help. Ivan has been described as a very serious player on the court, seldom smiling, but this just showed that he was totally concentrating on the game, and it paid off in aces.
