What Makes Lamborghini Wheels Different From The Rest?

Lamborghini Wheels

Lamborghini is an Italian luxury super car that arguably is set apart from the herd by multiple features. One of the biggest differences that distinguishes them from other manufacturers is the design of the wheels. While some of us may have never stopped to think about the importance of the wheels and how they affect the look and performance of a vehicle, it's a detail that Lambo has been on top of for decades. They maintain exclusivity in nearly every aspect of the design details for each vehicle that is produced. Are the wheels different from others? The answer is a decided yes. What makes Lamborghini wheels different from the rest? Here are the unique features of Lambo wheels that most people are not aware of.

Different sizes from front to back

The Lamborghini Aventador S model employs different sized wheels from the front to the back. On the front, the rims are 20-inches. The back wheel rims are 21-inches. This model features aluminum alloy wheels but it's the brand's only model that uses different wheel diameters.

Why does Lamborghini use larger rims on the back?

In rear wheel drive models, putting larger rims in the back affects the performance of the vehicle. The Aventador S comes in both RWD and AWD. For the RWD edition, having a wheel with a larger diameter in back puts more of the rubber in contact with the road along with vehicle axis. What this does for the performance is that it increased the acceleration potential. This makes perfect sense from an engineering and design perspective, but what about AWD models? Although front and rear wheels are all doing the same amount of work, unlike the RWD editions, the weight of the vehicle still shifts backward. Under conditions of heavy acceleration, the larger contact area provides AWDs with more stability as they recover from cornering.

Aesthetics

Performance enhancement is a good reason to use larger wheel rims in the back, but it's not the only reason that drives Lamborghini to use the larger rims in the rear. As most are aware, Lamborghini prides itself in designing some of the most unique vehicles in the world. The larger rims in the rear, at least for mid-engine vehicles puts the rear axle up in a higher position. This gives it a more aggressive visual and it looks more poised to take on the road in seriously fast driving.

They're exclusive and feature customized wheels for each model

Lamborghini insists on using exclusive wheels for some of its models. These details add to the overall differences in the look of each car that is released for sale. For example, the Murcielago Reventon is equipped with Alcoa wheels that are supplied exclusively for the Italian brand since 2007. The car features specialty wheels with a unique appearance just for this limited run vehicle and they measure 18 x 9 inches on the front and 18 x 13 inch wheels on the rear. They are directional-specific and each wheel is forged from a single block of 6061-T6 aluminum. The process for creating the wheels is unique. Each is machined and finished to achieve a unique style that is ultra strong and durable, yet lightweight, and engraved with the term "Alcoa Forged" to further distinguish them from others. The wheels are finished with a coating of Lamborghini bright black and then adorned with signature carbon fiber winglets to give them a unique aesthetic.

Benefits of the unique forging process

The process for creating Alcoa forged wheels is really quite extensive. If you're wondering why they're so expensive, it's because of the use of premium grade materials and the extensive process used to create them. We looked into the Alcoa process that was ordered to be specific by Lamborghini, and counted about 15 steps just to arrive at the customized wheel. The first processes include the billet slug preform where the single piece of aluminum alloy is sheared, cut and machined. It's placed int eh furnaces then open die forged in presses, then it goes through specific steps and the finish is also a labor intensive process of trimming, machining, heat treating, finishing, cleaning, and inspection for perfection. The forged wheels produced are up to 300 times stronger and more durable than cast wheels and they hold a polished shine longer. It's a precision process and Lamborghini is extremely particular about each step in the process to achieve a flawless finish.

The wheels are model-specific

Wheels for each Lamborghini model are made specifically for that model. Although Lambo isn't the only automaker that does this, they're the only ones that take it to such extremes. Wheels are taken seriously as a detail that affects performance and the appearance of each vehicle. When you go to buy replacement wheels for your Lamborghini, you'll find that there are specs offered from authorized dealers that can help you find the most suitable wheels for the specific model that you own. Not just any rim will do.

Conclusion

Lamborghini is an automaker that has earned a reputation for differentiating itself from other brands. When it comes to the wheels that are used, they are viewed as an important feature of the vehicle and just as Lambos are exclusive vehicles, so are the wheels that adorn each. There ae differences from front to back, and the wheels are custom ordered to match the intended aesthetic and meet the requirements for optimizing the performance and acceleration potential for each car design. After learning about the detailed and picky manufacturing processes that Lamborghini wheels are subjected to, it's hard not to admit that they are very different from the rest, and different in a good way. Much thought and consideration goes into the design process for each Lamborghini wheel that is made and accepted.
