10 Things You Didn’t Know about Thermo Fisher Scientific CEO Marc Casper

Marc Casper is the CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific, which is a U.S. corporation that specializes in biotech. Casper has been in this particular role since 2009. As a result, it is no exaggeration to say that he is responsible for a huge measure of its performance in recent times. Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Marc Casper:

1. Marc Comes from Marcus

Marc is one of the numerous names to have come from the Roman praenomen Marcus. Unfortunately, no one is sure what Marcus means, though most people believe that it is connected to the Roman god Mars in some manner. Due to this, it isn’t unknown for Marc and its related names to be translated as either “war-like” or something along those lines.

2. Casper Means Treasurer

In contrast, the meaning of Casper is much clearer. In short, it is a variation of Gaspar, which in turn, comes from the Chaldean word Gizbar, meaning “treasurer.” As for Chaldea, well, suffice to say that it was a Semitic-speaking nation that was eventually absorbed by the Babylonians so totally that the name became a label for a particular class of astrologers in the region.

3. Studied at Wesleyan University

For his Bachelor of Arts, Casper studied at Wesleyan University. For those who are unfamiliar with the name, Wesleyan University is a private liberal arts college in the state of Connecticut, which is one of the numerous schools that have been named for John Wesley, who was the English theologian considered to be the founder of Methodism.

4. Studied at Harvard Business School

Later, Casper went to Harvard Business School, which possesses a reputation for being one of the best schools in both the United States and beyond. There, he studied for a Master of Business Administration, which is a natural choice for people who enter into the ranks of senior management for obvious reasons.

5. He Comes from Thermo Electron

It is interesting to note that Casper came to Thermo Fisher Scientific via Thermo Electron. In short, what happened was that Thermo Fisher Scientific came into existence in 2006 because of a merger between Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific. Said merger was performed with a stock-for-stock exchange, but since the Federal Trade Commission ruled it to be anti-competitive for centrifugal evaporators, the resulting corporation had to sell Genevac.

6. He Served in Senior Positions at Thermo Fisher Scientific

Casper served in a number of important roles at Thermo Fisher Scientific before he became its CEO. One excellent example is how he was the COO, which would be the Chief Operating Officer that is responsible for overseeing a corporation’s operations. Generally speaking, this is a very important position, so much so that it is seen as the second-in-command in a lot of cases.

7. Has Overseen Multiple Buyouts

Over the course of his tenure as CEO, Casper has overseen the purchasing of more than one business. In particular, the purchase of Life Technologies Corporation in 2013 was notable because it made Thermo Fisher Scientific a global leader in the market for precision laboratory equipment.

8. Trustee of Massachusetts Math & Science Initiative

Casper is involved with other organizations as well. For example, he is a trustee of the Massachusetts Math & Science Initiative, which exists for the purpose of encouraging a wider range of students to study for STEM degrees as well as pursue careers in the relevant fields.

9. Trustee of US-China Business Council

Likewise, Casper is a trustee of the US-China Business Council. Like its name suggests, the US-China Business Council is a nonprofit that exists for the purpose of strengthening the commercial ties between the United States and China for its member businesses and thus the US economy as a whole. In more practical terms, this means that it is interested in engaging China using means of proven effectiveness for the purpose of eliminating trade barriers, eliminating investment barriers, and creating a business environment with clear and predictable rules for all relevant parties.

10. Member of Business Roundtable

Besides this, Casper is a member of the Business Roundtable as well. This time, the Business Roundtable is a collection of CEOs that exists for the purpose of promoting public policies that are beneficial for businesses. Some examples of its stances range from the support of NAFTA to the support of the No Child Left Behind Act.
