Whatever Happened to the Citi Prestige Credit Card?

For a very long time, people that had outstanding credit had the capability of getting what many considered to be one of the best credit cards on the market, the Citi Prestige card. It had a lot of really good benefits, especially those geared toward travel and it covered a lot of issues that most credit card companies never even think of. For example, this card not only gave you the opportunity to enjoy airfare for next to nothing because of its reward system, but it also provided coverage if you needed to be evacuated from another country for medical reasons. This meant that your savings weren't going to take the hit if you suddenly got sick or injured on a trip and you needed to get back to the United States in order to get medical treatment. That was a huge selling point for a lot of customers that like to spend a lot of time abroad.

All of these benefits, coupled with numerous other benefits that commonly come with top credit cards, meant that a lot of people were interested in having this card for themselves. As a matter of fact, plenty of individuals became Citi Prestige card holders. The company made it easy enough to apply for the card, providing a page on their website that allowed you to apply online right then and there. All of a sudden, customers went to the website in order to apply, only to find out that the particular page in question was no longer there. At first, many of them thought that there was just a glitch in the system or maybe someone had taken that particular page down for maintenance reasons. After a few weeks went by, it became clear that there was a bigger issue. The problem was, Citi never said anything about it. Eventually, they were tracked down and asked to provide a statement about the status of the Citi Prestige card.

Their answer was a little ambiguous, stating that they have in fact stopped allowing new people to apply for the card but that they might bring the card back in the future. Of course, they might not bring it back, too. While that wasn't directly said, it certainly wasn't guaranteed that this will continue to be a product that is offered to new card holders. While that might not be good news for people that don't yet have the Citi Prestige card, there is good news for people that already have this card in their possession.

If you already have the card, you can rest assured that it's not suddenly defunct. It's not going away and you still have full use of the card along with all of its benefits. As long as you keep your account current, you won't have to worry about losing the card or any of the many benefits that come with having it. That's something that provides a lot of relief for cardholders, because when the news first came out that it was no longer available for new applicants, a lot of people that are current cardholders started to wonder whether or not they would still be able to use that particular card in the future.

Citi claims that all of this is just a part of their regular business practices. According to them, they're always looking for new ways to change their products with the changing times and they decided that in this particular case, it was time to reevaluate some of the benefits they wanted to provide with the card in order to make sure that they were providing the best business they could to their customers. If you think that sounds a little strange, you're probably not the only one. If that's really the case, one might ask why they didn't merely continue to allow people to obtain this particular card while simultaneously making changes to the benefit packages attached to it. That's a question they don't seem to be willing to answer at this time, so it leaves a lot of people wondering if the Citi Prestige card will ever come back or not. Unfortunately, that's not something that can be answered with any certainty at the current time. If you already have the card, good for you. Keep using it and enjoying it. If you don't, you can decide to wait around for a while and see if they start allowing new applicants again or you can choose one of their other products. Like it or not, that is the reality of the situation, at least for now.
