Mackie began his acting career in the theater in 2002. First, First, he was the understudy for Don Cheadle in the play ‘Topdog/ Underdog.’ Then, Mackie had a role in the play ‘Talk’ and won an OBIE for his performance. The actor’s career in film and television began in 2002 when he landed a small role in the series ‘As If.’ In the same year, Mackie played the main antagonist in the film ‘8 Mile.’ His first starring role in a feature film came two years later when he starred in ‘Brother to Brother.’

Other films in which he appeared that year included ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’ ‘She Hates Me,’ ‘Haven,’ and ‘Million Dollar Baby.’ The latter won the Academy Award for Best Picture. A year later, Mackie appeared in the film ‘The Man.’ In 2006, Mackie starred in ‘Crossover,’ ‘We Are Marshall,’ ‘Freedomland,’ ‘Heavens Fall,’ and ‘Half Nelson.’ 2007 was a quieter year for Anthony Mackie, as the only film that he appeared in was ‘Ascension Day.’ Similarly, he appeared in just one film in 2008, ‘Eagle Eye.’ Mackie continued to work in theater and television during this time of his life. In 2008, he appeared in three plays by playwright August Wilson. Anthony Mackie was in the 2009 film ‘Notorious,’ playing the role of Tupac Shakur. It was the second time he had played the rapper, as he had previously portrayed Shakur while he was a drama student. In the same year, Mackie was in ‘American Violet,’ ‘Desert Flower, and ‘The Hurt Locker.’ For the latter, Mackie won multiple awards for his performance. The following year, he played Marcus Washington in ‘Night Catches Us.’

Mackie’s success continued moving into the 2010s, as he landed multiple roles in feature films. In 2011 alone, he appeared in five films, including ‘The Adjustment Bureau,’ ’10 Years,’ ‘What’s Your Number?’ and ‘Real Steel.’ The following year, Mackie played Mike Ackerman in ‘Man on the Ledge’ and Will Johnson in ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.’ One of Mackie’s busiest and most successful years was 2013. In this year, his films included ‘Gangster Squad,’ ‘Repentance,’ ‘Pain & Gain,’ ‘The Fifth Estate,’ ‘Runner Runner,’ and ‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete.’ The role for which Anthony Mackie is now best known is Sam Wilson/ Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Mackie played this role for the first time in 2014 in the film ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. The actor reprised the roles for the 2015 films ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and ‘Ant-Man,’ the 2016 film ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in 2018, and the 2019 film ‘Avengers: Endgame.’

Mackie also played the role of Sam Wilson/Falcon/Captain America in the Disney+ television miniseries ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ in 2021. For his performance in this series, Anthony Mackie won two MTV Awards, one for Best Hero and another for Best Duo, which was shared with Sebastian Stan. Alongside appearing in various Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Anthony Mackie has continued to take on many other roles. Between 2014 and 2015, his films have included ‘Black or White,’ ‘Shelter,’ ‘Playing It Cool,’ ‘Our Brand Is Crisis,’ ‘Love the Coopers,’ and ‘The Night Before.’ From 2016 to 2020, Anthony Mackie has had roles in ‘Triple 9,’ ‘Detroit,’ ‘The Hate You Give,’ ‘Io,’ ‘Miss Bala,’ ‘Point Blank,’ ‘Synchronic,’ ‘Seberg,’ and ‘The Banker.’ Mackie provided the voice and motion capture for the 2018 video game ‘NBA 2K19.’ Most recently, Anthony Mackie has had roles in two 2021 films. The actor portrayed Captain Leo in ‘Outside the Wire’ and Edward Fox in ‘The Woman in the Window.’ He also plays Tom in the television anthology series ‘Solos. Others in this series include Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Constance Wu, Helen Mirren, Dan Stevens, and Uzo Aduba.

Other Ventures

In addition to his acting work, Anthony Mackie is also a former bar owner. In 2011, Mackie opened a bar in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, called NoBar. It was reported in 2013 that the actor intended to open a second location of NoBar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. However, this never happened, and he then closed the original location in 2015.

The former couple has four sons together from the marriage, although Pop Sugar says that they never share the children’s names.
