The Breitling Colt Racer: The Cheapest, Lightest and Most Precise

Breitling is a has been one of the biggest contributors to the world of watches, especially the wrist chronograph watch, and it has long been recognized as the leader of this complication. As a matter-of-fact, it is the only company that has ever equipped all of its watches with the chronograph movement. They recognized that the chronograph was the highest precision performance in a watch and the company even went beyond to develop their chronograph movements, which were developed in their own workshops. They are one of the only remaining independent Swiss watch brands still around today. The company continues to strive to give customers the highest quality timepieces by using the latest technology and innovation to design watches for many different genres, from sports, race car driving, aviation, diving, and more.

Colt Skyracer

One of the brands latest lineups in their history of watch models and introduced at Baselworld 2017, is the Colt Skyracer. This has been dubbed, the cheapest, the lightest and is the most precise Breitling you’ll find. It also carries all the Breitling basics of expectation from the name, durable, comfortable, legible and readable. These are all the things you look for in a watch, but this watch has more. Here are some of the best features of the Colt Skyracer.

Casing – The Colt Skyracer sports the same carbon case material that is used in many of Breitling’s other watches use. Those who have always appreciated this feature about the Breitling watches, will be happy with this. The case is only 45mm wide and 13.5 mm thick, but actually feels much lighter than steel being that the case is constructed of black carbon. Many wearers have said that it is the lightest “big” watch they’ve ever worn, and something that they feel like they would see in an ultra thin watch. The case is also water-resistant up to 100 meters and dons a rotating bezel with an AR-coated domed sapphire crystal that sits over the dial.

Dial – What a lot of men will enjoy about this Breitling dial is the easy readability of the dial. All of the numbers and features are very legible no matter what time of day or night. This has a lot to do with the SuperLuminova applied to its indexes and handset, all except the seconds hand; it didn’t get any of the lume, which for some may have been a benefit, especially runners that run in the night.

Other features you will find on the dial includes molded rubber crown, which is a nice feature and makes easy handling, especially for those who may be wearing gloves and have a difficult time grabbing a traditional crown. This is a feature that Breitling often utilizes in consideration of the aviators or aviation enthusiasts who they often have in mind when they are designing their watches. Speaking of aviation, there is also a dedicated scale for 24-hour military time on the dial, as well as a date indicator window. Breitling wanted to include all the functions that matter most, while not being boring with its design and the Colt Skyracer certainly is footing that bill perfectly so far.

QuartzBreitling used the Flatline 955.652 SuperQuartz caliber which beats at 32,768 Hz. It gives the watch a one-second pulse, which is visible as you watch the regularly timed jumping of the seconds hand. This accuracy is an amazing, twenty times better than that of a standard quartz watch and Breitling makes this possible with what is known as the thermistor.

Battery life – The battery offers you a solid 8 years before needing replacing. There is a battery indicator, too, to let you know when it is getting close to the time of needing to get a new battery. You will know when it is time to change the battery when you start to see the second hand do larger jumps than the traditional one second intervals that it is supposed to do.

Strap – The black rubber strap is thick and durable, and displays a ruler along the edges of each side. It is actually a conversion table that displays inches to centimeters, making it easy for those who would utilize this feature for maps. The lightweight of the band makes it a plus for anyone who does not want a thick, heavy or bulky band, especially in warmer temperatures where heavy bands can weigh you down or make you sweat. TO make it even more convenient, the strap has a quick release so that should you need to use the measurements quickly, you have an easy way to access to them.

Accuracy – This Breitling has amazing accuracy and guarantees it. Breitling’s accuracy guarantee is that your Colt Skyracer will keep accurate tie to under 10 seconds per year.

Pricing – Although this is considered one of the most affordable Breitling watches ever made, the bottom line is, will consumers think that the watch is reasonable priced at $2,000, and will they be willing to pay that for all they get with this ultra lightweight, multi-feature watch? Breitling believes so because they have a strong history of making watches for the “every man” and this is one that happens to fit the bill nicely, while moderately priced.
