How Does Dak Prescott Make Money?

Dak Prescott has accumulated a lot of wealth throughout his football career. His major break happened in 2021 when he signed a four-year contract worth $160 million with the Dallas Cowboys.

The contract included a signing bonus of $66 million and an annual salary of $40 million. This means Dak Prescott will play for the team for two more years and may extend his contract thereafter.

Before signing with the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott had amassed approximately $131.3 million in earnings while playing as a quarterback for close to seven seasons. A third of the amount was paid in salaries ($39,404,000).

Dak Prescott’s Budding Career

The 29-year-old player began playing football in college where he delivered spectacular performances for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. After graduating, Prescott became a professional football and basketball player.

The Louisiana-born player wanted to join the NFL by the Dallas Cowboys but his initial attempts proved futile. It was only after the fourth round that the Dallas Cowboys management decided to give Prescott a rookie contract. The contract earned him $1 million per year for one year only.

However, his performance during that season was so impressive that the coaches decided to offer Prescott a regular contract before the end of the rookie contract. During the Wild Card game, he made four touchdowns and completed 25 of the 33 passes without interceptions.

Dak also gained 24 yards in seven carries and contributed 30 of the team’s 31 points. The new contract saw his salary bump up to $5 million with a $7 million signing bonus.

Dak was named an All-Star rookie for the team having won the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year. He set several quarterback records for the rookie team and helped the Cowboys lead in the NFC. All these achievements saw Prescott selected for the 2016 Pro Bowl award too.

Before the end of the contract, the Dallas Cowboys awarded him another contract but this time it was a five-year contract with an extension of $200 million.

Prescot has played for the Dallas Cowboys for seven seasons, but it’s during the first five seasons that he earned the most - $36,312,172.

Prescott’s Earnings Over His Career

Prescott’s earnings have grown over the years since the Dallas Cowboys signed him. The one-million-dollar contract saw him earn a base salary of $600,000. In 2018, the Dallas Cowboys approached him for a contract extension which would see him match Jimmy Garoppolo’s $140 million-dollar deal.

However, Dak turned down the deal which would have seen him earn $30 million every year. A few months down the line, Dak suffered a leg injury which appeared to be the end of his career.

He made a comeback in 2021 when he signed his current $160 million contract. The contract would see him earn $40 million per year for three years with a dead cap value of $89,070,000 and a cap hit of $49,130,000.
