20 Things You Didn't Know about Discord

Discord

Have you ever wondered whether or not it would be nice to have almost immediate access to people that have the same interests that you do, even if that access is largely from online activity? if you have, you're not alone. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of people that have those same desires. That's precisely how Discord came into existence. If you're not familiar with it, it's an app that supposedly allows you to connect with people all over the world that have the same interests as you do. That sounds interesting, even if a little suspicious. Chances are, it at least has your curiosity up. If you want to know more, here are 20 things about the company that you really should know before you decide if it's right for you or not.

1. They operate thousands of chat rooms called servers

The first thing you need to know about this company is that they operate literally thousands of different chat rooms. They call each one of these chat rooms servers. Depending on the subject in question, you can typically find a dedicated chat room, or server for that subject matter. The company itself says that it is a way for people to connect with one another who have similar interests.

2. They’ve been in business since 2015

It's interesting to note that a lot of people still haven't heard of Discord, despite the fact that they've been in business since 2015. They even had a preview of their services the prior year, before they officially went online. Although they've been popular in some circles for a number of years now, they've only recently started to gain widespread attention. At last, people are starting to take notice of them more and more, although it's still a far cry from being on the level of Twitter or Instagram. That said, there is every possibility that they could eventually achieve that status, especially if they keep going in the direction that they're currently headed.

3. The company operates in several different languages

As you might have guessed, they operate in a number of different languages since their goal is to bring people together from all over the world. As such, they currently have 28 different languages that they operate in and they're adding more all the time. Why do they operate in so many different languages? There are essentially two reasons for this. The first is because they operate on a worldwide basis, as previously mentioned. The second is because they want to be able to bring people together from different geographic areas who have similar interests. That can only be accomplished if their program is compatible with a number of different languages. After all, someone that's based in Canada can't very well converse with someone that is located in an entirely different part of the world unless they can break through the language barrier. The program that Discord uses allows them to do exactly that. When you're using the system, you can converse in your own native language or another language that you've learned. By the same token, you can also talk to someone who doesn't even speak the same language as you by using their system to convert one language into another.

4. You can download an app or use your laptop

The company has set out to make things as flexible as possible. In doing so, they created a system that allows you to use an app on your smartphone, yet at the same time you can also download their program onto your laptop. It also works for both IOS and Android, so it doesn't matter if you're using an iPhone or a completely different Android-based smartphone, you still have access to the system. The same is true with your computer. It works equally well on a PC or Mac.

5. They let you create your own chat room based on your interests

If you download their system in hopes of finding a particular subject matter so you can sign up for that server and you don't find what you're looking for, you're not necessarily out of luck. As a matter of fact, they have people all over the globe creating new chat rooms every single day. If you don't find exactly what you had hoped to, you can actually create your own chat room based specifically around your interests. That said, it's very rare that you won't find something that aligns with your interests because as previously mentioned, there are thousands upon thousands of servers that are currently operating. That means that more often than not, even people who have the most unique interests can find something that works well for them.

6. They also let users call one another through the app

Discord is more than just a chat room because they also allow their users to call one another based on their VoIP system. As opposed to being a traditional chat room that only allows you to type responses back and forth to one another, you can actually call each other through that program. That keeps phone lines open and it still gives you the opportunity to verbally speak with someone that shares the same interests as you. The best part is that it provides an avenue to talk to people who literally live on the other side of the world, even if you don't have that particular type of plan on your smartphone. The end result is that you can hold a three-hour conversation with someone who lives in another hemisphere without adding up the charges with your cell phone carrier.

7. Video calls are available, too

In much the same way that you can call someone, you can also do video chats. They even allow you to stream information on those video chats. This works especially well for anyone who is a gamer or is involved in some type of art that relies on the visual senses. After all, not everything can be conveyed through a chat room or even a telephone call. There are times when you need to be able to see what the other person is doing and Discord provides an avenue for that to happen.

8. The company says they are like a group chat, only uber specific

The company doesn't deny that they operate on mainly the same principle as any other program that uses a group chat platform, with one major difference. They are very specific concerning the individual servers, or chat rooms that people can join. In a traditional chat room, you're sitting there and hoping that you might be able to connect with another person because everyone is sort of thrown into the same chat room together. The system the Discord uses is different in the sense that you can find a chat room that centers around training dogs if that is the thing that you're into. That puts you squarely in a chat room that allows you to talk to other people who have that exact same interests as opposed to just dumping you in a giant virtual room with tens of thousands of other people.

9. Their goal is to make communication easier

The company says that their goal is to make it easier for people to communicate with one another. This is very helpful for individuals who don't know anyone in their physical circle that shares the same interests that they do. It also works well for people who live in rural areas and desperately want to explore their interests that may not be prevalent in those areas. If you're living in the middle of nowhere and you don't have a lot of good access to the Arts or something similar, Discord can be a way of getting that access without forcing you to move to another location in order to do it.

10. They also want to help foster individual interests

Part of the reason that they are specific about developing individual chat rooms is because they want to foster the individual interests of people. They realize how important it is to develop those types of interests and allow people to truly come into their own as opposed to adapting their own desires in an effort to fit in. When you're a part of Discord, you have the ability to be honest about what you're genuinely interested in as opposed to trying to go with the flow, so to speak.

11. Their servers are as varied as the people who use them

As such, their servers are just as varied as the people who are part of the system. You can find almost anything on Discord and this can potentially open up a whole world of possibilities for you and others.

12. They use reliable technology

There are few things more frustrating than signing up for something like this and then finding out that they use technology that crashes every time you turn around. Fortunately, Discord does not fall into that category. In fact, they use what is often referred to as low latency technology. It's a fancy term for technology that is reliable, well tested and proven to work even when most other things don't. In a world where more and more people are communicating through social media, it's good to know that you have other options available to you if you can't communicate with someone through more traditional means.

13. You can learn new things on their site

Since you have access to all kinds of different chat rooms, you also have the opportunity to learn new things on their site. Imagine having a desire to earn how to play a specific musical instrument, yet not having access to anyone in your geographic area that can help you learn how to do it. You can use Discord for exactly this type of thing and so much more.

14. You can even enhance your education

You even have the opportunity to further your education by participating in study groups that can be formed through their system. That can prove to be invaluable if you are part of an especially challenging course and you're trying to get through it without driving yourself nuts in the process.

15. People can use their system to enhance their daily lives

You can even use the system to make your daily life more interesting. You might use it to check out a new recipe or even talk to someone who loves music about a new group that you haven't heard yet. Perhaps without Discord, you never would have become aware of them.

16. Loads of people are registered with the company

While the system may not be as popular as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, they definitely aren't hiding in the shadows, either. In fact, there are approximately 350 million people who are currently registered to use one or more servers on Discord. The thing is, more and more people are signing up every day.

17. They have millions of people who actively use their system

Typically, they have roughly 150 million people that routinely use the system at least once a month. Of course, that number can fluctuate depending on the time of year or how popular something has become. By the same token, they have servers that are more popular than others, as one would obviously think.

18. Sometimes their servers are a little too popular

Speaking of popular servers, it's sometimes possible for their service to be a bit too popular. They typically allow hundreds of thousands people to be on one server at any one given time. In fact, they cap that number at about 800,000 people. On a few rare occasions, they have had such interest generated in a topic that more people were interested than could actually gain access.

19. They even have publishers and game developers getting in the mix

In a move that shows you that they are truly coming into their own, they now have both publishers and game developers verifying servers just like they would verify their account on Instagram. It's another way to bring more people into the mix and help people find out more information about what they're genuinely interested in.

20.They started mainly as a way for serious gamers to connect

When the company first started, they were mainly aimed toward people who were serious gamers, allowing them to connect all over the world. Today, there seems to be a chat room for virtually any topic you can imagine. In a relatively short amount of time, they have more or less reinvented themselves without losing the things that made them popular in the first place.
