10 Benefits of Having an Exxon Mobil Credit Card
The Exxon-Mobil gas station card is hardly your run of the mill credit card. It incorporates many benefits that you average credit card does not, making it an ideal card for everyday use or for those road trips you take on long weekends and vacations.
1. Discounts at the pump.
The best thing about any gasoline card is that you are virtually guaranteed cents off per gallon no matter what the price of gas is at the time. Stopping in at an Exxon or Mobil gas station gets you 6 cents per gallon off the posted price. Frequent drivers benefit from this type of travel discount far more than frequent flyers, so it’s an argument to stay on the ground.
2. No annual fee.
The Exxon-Mobil credit card is a credit card, not just a gas card, so not having to pay an annual fee is a huge benefit. Every dollar of your credit limit will be used to spend on your purchases, not on paying a company a fee which you will possibly be paying interest on as well.
3. No penalty for fraudulent use of your card.
Gas station pumps are a prime target for skimmers, devices that steal your credit card number and are then sold on the dark web. Not being responsible for something that is out of your control is an essential feature for an oil company’s card. They understand this, and have done something about it.
4. No rewards points are offered.
Why is this a benefit? Because you get the cash back immediately every time you go to the pump. Instead of waiting for rewards to accumulate or try to understand limitations and exclusions, you see the benefit of using the card – immediately.
5. No foreign transaction fee.
Though it may seem the Exxon-Mobil card is strictly for domestic use, it can also be used when traveling abroad. Many other credit cards will add to your travel expenses by charging a foreign transaction fee. This card doesn’t.
6. It discourages using the card as a cash reserve.
The cash advance fee is a minimum of $10. This is rather steep compared to many credit cards (you will have to withdraw a minimum of $200 to make it worth your while with this card), and the alternative to the $10 minimum is you will be charged 5% of the total amount of cash advanced. All those smallish $20 and $50 withdrawals will cost you dearly ($10 is a 50% rate on a $20 withdrawal), a point you must take into consideration before applying for the card.
7. You can track your fuel costs.
It was mentioned earlier that this is more of a travel card than a standard credit card. That is why this feature is offered. People who fill up regularly can better manage their personal and travel budgets and see the underlying benefit of the card.
8. Citi Identity Theft Solutions.
In addition to zero liability for fraudulent purchases, Exxon-Mobil has enlisted the services of Citibank’s Identity Theft system. Anyone who has had their identity stolen knows the aggravation and time it takes to set your identity straight and get your life back on track. Reducing your chances of this happening is invaluable.
9. Up to 50 cents off per gallon when using Synergy fuel.
Synergy fuel is not found at all 11,000+ Exxon-Mobil stations, but you should check and see if one is in your area. If so, then for the first two months of getting your new card you can get 50 cents per gallon off by using their smartphone app, otherwise it’s 12 cents a gallon. Either way, that is a significant introductory savings.
10. Downloading their smartphone app is rewarding.
Though not directly connected to the Exxon-Mobil credit card, you can find ways to earn reward points by applying separately for their rewards plus card. However, you should be warned that there are some limitations to earning reward points, as they are primarily targeting gasoline purchases.
Obviously this card is not for everybody. If a good amount of your time is spent driving as a matter of work or home responsibilities, there are a number of benefits that are hard to find on other credit cards. Those benefits put cash back in your pocket immediately, something that is preferred over racking up rewards points.
