John was born on 20th May 1956 in Wilmington, which makes him 63 years old currently. Both of his parents, Jack and Ann Carney were educators. He grew up in a large family, as he is the second born among 9 children. He and his siblings were raised Claymont.

2. Education

John attended St Mark’s High school. There, he took an interest in football and led the school to its first state championship in the year 1973. After completing high school education, he gained entry into the Dartmouth college where he continued to actively play Football. His efforts and skills at the game were crowned with an All-Ivy League and Most Valuable Players Honors. He later returned to Delaware to undertake a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of Delaware. Even after he was done with college, John did not let go of his passion for football. He began sharing his acquired skills through coaching Freshmen Football on the staff of UD Head Coach Tubby Raymond.

3. Early Political Career

John began his political career as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of New Castle County. He also held the position of Secretary of Finance and Deputy Chief of Staff of Governor. He served in these roles for quite some time and they helped hone his skills and shape his career to what it is today.

4. He has Served in Delaware for Over 30 Years

Though he only took over the governor’s role in 2017, John has long been serving the people of Delaware in other capacities. He has served under titles including; Lieutenant Governor of Delaware (2001 -2009), Chairman of the Board of Pardons, Delaware Healthcare Commission, Interagency Council on Adult Literacy, The Livable Delaware Advisory council, National Lieutenant Association and the Center for Education Technology among others. In each of these capacities, he performed his duties diligently and impressed those under him.
