Among the leaders doing a commendable job is John Carney, as he has proved to be a relentless and eloquent leader. His efforts in keeping Delawareans safe from the virus, are not only noticeable but have also borne fruits – Delaware is currently among the states with the lowest number of Coronavirus cases. Apart from his leadership face, here are 10 things you probably did not know about John Carney.

1. Background

John was born on 20th May 1956 in Wilmington, which makes him 63 years old currently. Both of his parents, Jack and Ann Carney were educators. He grew up in a large family, as he is the second born among 9 children. He and his siblings were raised Claymont.

2. Education

John attended St Mark’s High school. There, he took an interest in football and led the school to its first state championship in the year 1973. After completing high school education, he gained entry into the Dartmouth college where he continued to actively play Football. His efforts and skills at the game were crowned with an All-Ivy League and Most Valuable Players Honors. He later returned to Delaware to undertake a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of Delaware. Even after he was done with college, John did not let go of his passion for football. He began sharing his acquired skills through coaching Freshmen Football on the staff of UD Head Coach Tubby Raymond.

3. Early Political Career

John began his political career as the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of New Castle County. He also held the position of Secretary of Finance and Deputy Chief of Staff of Governor. He served in these roles for quite some time and they helped hone his skills and shape his career to what it is today.

4. He has Served in Delaware for Over 30 Years

Though he only took over the governor’s role in 2017, John has long been serving the people of Delaware in other capacities. He has served under titles including; Lieutenant Governor of Delaware (2001 -2009), Chairman of the Board of Pardons, Delaware Healthcare Commission, Interagency Council on Adult Literacy, The Livable Delaware Advisory council, National Lieutenant Association and the Center for Education Technology among others. In each of these capacities, he performed his duties diligently and impressed those under him. So, when it came to the elections of his current position, his previous works spoke for him hence, he did not have to do a lot of convincing to win.

5. His Aspirations

Undoubtedly John’s calling is in leadership. According to Delaware.gov, John aspires to make the lives of his people better while he is governor. His agendas include providing more resources for high-needs schools, lower Healthcare costs for Delawareans, grow small businesses that will lead to job creation, and help veterans easily enter the job market among others. It gives him great joy to see the lives of his people become better.

6. He is an Advocate for Healthy Lifestyles.

John is not only concerned about a healthy lifestyle for himself but also every Delawarean. For the longest time, he has been a front runner in sponsoring programs that encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle by becoming more active. Two such programs include “BeHealthy Delaware” and “The Lt. Governors Challenge.” They both addressed unhealthy lifestyles and their contribution to the high rate of chronic diseases in the state. He also supported Delaware’s public smoking ban to reduce cancer rates and smoking among young people.

7. Relationship

According to Wikipedia, John is married to Tracy and the couple has two children Sam Carney and Jimmy Carney. He and his family currently reside in Wilmington.

8. He Loves Dogs

John adores dogs. According to one of his Instagram posts, he finds them adorable. While away from his demanding job, he loves to spare some time and have fun with them.

9. He is a Big Fan of Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles, an American Football team based in Philadelphia has been around for a long time. Since the year 1933, they have continued to impress and win themselves numerous games. As a result, they have won the hearts of many Americans and have many fans. One of their greatest supporters is John. He has often displayed his love for the team by attending their matches and also posting pictures of him enjoying the games. Once in a while, he and his sons can be seen wearings Eagle’s tees. “We’ve been Philadelphia Eagles fans our whole lives,” he says.Generally, John has a soft spot for sports. It is one of the areas he dedicates his time and resources on. According to him, sports are not only fun but also benefit many young people in the society.

John takes advantage of social media platforms to bond and connect with his people. He has created accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, and YouTube.
