A Closer Look at The Scorpion EXO-R420 Helmet

Scorpion EXO-R420 Helmet

The most recent member in the Scorpion EXO's full-face street helmets is the Scorpion EXO-R420. This helmet comes with a SNELL-approved (ultra-lightweight) LG polycarbonate shell and the Elliptec II face shield that makes the helmet more aerodynamic. The EXO-R420 helmet ushers in a new era for Scorpion EXO's full-face street helmets with washable cheek pads, an emergency release system, and an Elliptec II face shield with a latching shield locking system. An aero-tuned ventilation system that uses mouth vents and large top vents that is designed to allow more airflow to the cyclist's head while regulating surrounding noise levels. Here, we will take a closer look at the Scorpion EXO-R420 Helmet.

Overview

The most notable feature of the EXO-R420 helmet is the all-new advanced polycarbonate shell that is small-sized, very lightweight, SNELL-approved, and more aerodynamic. This helmet also has the new Elliptec II face shield with a latching shield locking mechanism placed in the bottom center of the shield. The engineering behind the face shield focuses on providing a tighter seal and a more secure feel against the gasket. According to RevZilla, the EXO-R420 has the EverClear No-fog coating effective in keeping your vision clear even in damp and cold environmental conditions. The KwikWick II comfort face line is also quick-drying, moisture-wicking, machine washable, and easily removed. Like the EXO-400 series helmets that are known for their excellent value and perfect finish, the EXO-R420 has a lot to live up to. Moreover, Scorpion has done impressive work in improving and updating the previous version – EXO-400, with the release of the EXO-R420. This helmet is available in four solid color options: matte black, matte titanium, white and black. The helmet is also available in four graphic options. The Scorpion EX0-R420 is available in a wide array of colors and styles to satisfy most product users, and their sleek helmet design is rounded off with a quality clear coat.

Shell Material

The Scorpion EXO-R420 helmet comes with a SNELL-approved (ultra-lightweight) LG polycarbonate shell, which effectively ensures the rider's safety. Although polycarbonate is much heavier than composite shells, it is much better at energy consumption, all thanks to its very flexible nature. Flexibility on the EXO-R420 can be easily demonstrated by pulling and squeezing on the shell. Based on the tests on the Scorpion EXO-R420, it made very little noise in the way of squeaks and creaks. The helmet's shell materials also feel solid and friendly with a quality feel.

Paint and Graphics

The paint and graphics in the EXO-R420 are coated with a charming coat layer that is smooth and well-polished. Like most of Scorpion's EXO-400 Series helmets. The Scorpion EXO-R420 has a decent finish that complements the helmet's overall look. Additionally, the decals on the EXO-R420 are straight and perfectly aligned for a sleek appearance.

Helmet Fit And Internal Shape

The Scorpion EXO-R420 helmet is available in a large size measuring 59cm to 60cm. Regardless of its enormous size, the sizable EXO-R420 helmet is a comfortable fit fitted with two of the larger shell sizes that work perfectly and smoothly. It may be pretty snug on the side due to the thick padding, but it will eventually break in and provide a comfortable fit. When it comes to the internal shape, the EXO-R420 internal shape can be rated between an oval neutral, and intermediate. This means it can be categorized between the EXO-R410 and EXO-400, respectively.

Ventilation

Ventilation in the Scorpion EXO-R420 is handled by three vents; a top vent, an exhaust vent, and a chin vent. Sliding down the cover on the chin vent, you will hear a "click" sound that immediately reveals a vent that directs air towards the face shield, and another click opens a direct air path to the chin bar. The top vent has a closeable dual scoop that reveals two holes in the helmet shell that reveal the EPS liner. The rear exhaust vent has straight small ports through which one can see the light from a flashlight through these holes.

Eye Port and Visibility

Compared to most rider helmets, the Scorpion EXO-R420 has more rider visibility, good peripheral vision, and side-to-side visibility. This feature is essential in helping the rider become aware of the dangers and hazards around them. However, the helmet's top to bottom view is quite restrictive as the lower end has a better view than the top. The X-R420 eye-port is well-engineered to allow for a more upright riding position such as touring, sport-touring, and everyday riding.

Noise Control

The Scorpion EXO-R420 helmet is well-designed to control wind noise much better than most rider helmets within its price range. The wind noise is very low at average speeds of about 40-50 mph, and all you can here is minimal rushing wind noise. While moving at highway speeds, very slight low-frequency wind noise can be heard but remains well-controlled. Moreover, the helmet's size can affect the noise reduction rate due to the difference in pad thickness.

Conclusion

The Scorpion EXO-R420 helmet has proven to be a worthy successor of the Scorpion 400-series with its newly improved features. Although it deviates from the more standard shell shape seen on the previous helmets, the new EX0-R420 helmet continues to uphold the brand's reputation of providing quality and perfect-fit helmets. Other significant changes with the new EXO-R420 are the interior shape and the exterior shell engineered for improved rider safety. Per Amazon, the Scorpion EX0-R420 helmet is sold at an average price of $164.95.
