Before her difficult divorce with Johnny Depp and the resulting defamation trial, Amber Heard was best known as a gorgeous and talented actress with a string of successful (and sometimes unsuccessful) films. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for her in the defamation suit and she is looking at a huge settlement that may devastate her net worth for years to come.
What exactly are the Amber Heard net worth numbers and will she be able to pay for the money she legally owns Johnny Depp? Understanding this financial situation can make it easier to understand the trouble she's in and whether or not she'll be able to dig her way out of it. This situation is complex and requires a deep look at her finances, where she earned her money, and much more.
Amber Heard Net Worth Values
Amber Heard's net worth is complex because of her financial difficulties after the defamation lawsuit. Her career has included multiple roles in major movies, including in various DC comic book movies. These included making at least $5 million from the first Aquaman film. Heard also earned at least $7 million from her divorce against Johnny Depp
As a result, there are several different net worth evaluations around this actress. Most claim that she has an estimated net worth of between $6 to $8 million. That value is nowhere near high enough to cover the money she lost in her case with Johnny Depp, though she does have insurance that may help cover much of these costs. That said, there are still issues with her insurance company that may further affect this situation.
Therefore, it is important to take a deep look at her career, examine its successes and where she was at financially before she lost the defamation lawsuit against Johnny Depp. It is also critical to examine her insurance situation and whether or not they'll cover the majority of her lawsuit or if she's going to be in a very financially destructive situation very soon.
How Heard Earned Her Money
Before her trial with Depp, Heard was mostly known for her role in the DC superhero movie series Aquaman. She had signed a four-picture deal with Warner Brothers at the time to appear in these movies, along with a potential $2 million for the sequel and $3-4 million for a third film.
Heard also found success in the nine-episode “The Stand” series and earned close to $2 million for her work there. Heard has also earned money through various beauty deals, particularly with L'Oreal, which gave her over $1.6 million in a contract for her to promote their products.
Her Struggles With Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard dated for several years before they were married in 2015. However, Heard filed for divorce from Depp in 2016 and got a restraining order against Depp after the divorce. Heard claimed to have been a victim of abuse from Depp for years. This abuse allegedly included physical and emotional abuse. There was evidence that such abuse did occur.
At the time, an outrage against Johnny Depp erupted that lasted for many years. Heard continued to work in the film industry (as did Depp), as the actress vowed to donate her $7 million divorce settlement to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the ACLU. However, this situation became very complex after Depp eventually filed a defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife.
In this lawsuit, he claimed that her continued insistence that he abused her was inaccurate. He also accused her of not donating money to the proper sources. This complex web of information made it very hard to understand who was telling the truth and who was lying. It also produced a media circus trial during which Heard got repeatedly mocked by many throughout the internet.
The Defamation Trial
Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard in Virginia in 2022 in a case that quickly became a media circus. Claims of abuse between both parties became rampant, with Depp claiming that he was the abused party and that he had not abused her at all, in spite of video and audio evidence of him physically and emotionally abusing Heard.
During testimony in the trial, Depp's lawyers revealed that The Children's Hospital had gotten only $100,000 from Heard after she had said she would donate $3.5 million. While the ACLU stated that they'd received $1.3 million from her and had set up a donation plan over the next 10 years, about $350,000 had come from Heard with another $500,000 coming from her then-boyfriend, Elon Musk.
What did this have to do with the defamation lawsuit? It was an attempt by Depp and his lawyers to prove that Heard was a lawyer. This is what the legal system calls “character testimony” and is designed to help a jury better understand a person's personality. It apparently worked because Heard, after many weeks of difficult testimony, was ordered to pay $15 million of the $50 million Depp demanded.
This ruling came in spite of the fact that a court in the UK in a defamation case against News Group Newspapers had ruled that 12 of the 14 alleged instances of abuse Heard claimed were “substantially true.” Depp lost an appeal, which gave legal precedence to the claims that Heard had made. However, her emotionally fraught testimony and instances of previous lying were damning to her case.
About $5 million of the punitive damages were reduced to $350,000 due to Virginia law capping how much people can earn in lawsuits. Heard earned $2 million in a countersuit against Depp, meaning she owes him about $8 million for the defamation suit. She is already appealing the verdict.
Why Heard Had No Spousal Support
During her divorce trial, Heard had initially asked for spousal support, claiming $50,000 per month to cover her life expenses. These include $10,000 rent in an expensive Hollywood apartment, $10,000 for pet supplies and legal costs, and $2,000 for eating out every month. Her claim at the time was that s he only earned $27,000 per year from film royalties and couldn't support herself.
Court documents revealed that Heard had made a net income of $40,000 in 2014. At the time of the divorce, she stated that she had a savings of just $25,000. This heavy spending is part of life in Hollywood and her argument was that she should continue having the quality of life that she had with Depp while they were married.
In spite of providing financial documents that verified some of her claims, Heard eventually withdrew her request for spousal abuse. As mentioned previously, Depp agreed to pay her $7 million in a settlement, a value that is far below his alleged $150 million value. Heard stated that she simply wanted to finish the divorce with minimal difficulties or fanfare.
Complications With Her Insurance Company
As if losing the defamation case wasn't bad enough for the struggling Heard, her insurance company, New York Marine and General Insurance Company filed a lawsuit against Heard to get off of paying for her lawsuit, including the expenses related to it. Their argument is that she lost the case due to “willful acts.” For example, her defamation against Johnny Depp that caused her to lose the case.
Heard has filed countersuit against her insurance company in an attempt to get help. Insurance experts are stating that she may not have a case. That's because her policy explicitly states that it does not cover willful acts. Also, by losing her lawsuit due to defamation, she is not covered. Others state that this interpretation is inaccurate. It's also possibly that liability protection extends beyond what her company is attempting to avoid paying.
The situation is very complex and could put Heard in a very challenging situation. If her net worth is between $6 to $8 million, that means she would be unable to afford paying Depp the money she owes. Declaring bankruptcy wouldn't help much in this situation and would affect her life for many decades.
Depp's fans claim that this is a vindication of his reputation, while others argue it's an injustice against an abused woman. However, there are others who believe Heard was abusive toward Depp as well. Whatever the situation,. Heard is vowing to fight the verdict in whatever way she can.
