The 10 Best Travel Insurance Companies in the World

Travel Insurance

In a perfect world, we wouldn't need travel insurance. But this isn't a perfect world and when things go wrong, having the right protection in place can make a huge difference. If you'd rather avoid incurring costly overseas medical bills or losing a chunk of your pre-paid travel expenses if your travel plans change, get your travel insurance organized before you even consider packing your case. If you're not sure where to start, these are the 10 best travel insurance companies to consider.

10. Generali

As ConsumersAdvocate.org notes, Generali provides great value for your buck. Their range of policies is incredibly comprehensive, with each offering the benefit of a 24/7 Telemedicine service that allows policyholders to access a network of American doctors for non-emergency medical consultations, advice, and prescriptions while traveling. All plans come with standard features like baggage and trip delay, trip interruption, and cancelation coverage, along with a very impressive assortment of features like specialty food delivery, emergency cash advances, and travel companion meet and greet services.

9. Berkshire Hathaway WaveCare

Like our next entry, Berkshire Hathaway WaveCare is primarily focused on cruises. In fact, it was created specifically for them, with the result that its policies cover almost every type of cruise-related insurance need imaginable. Together with standard things like trip cancellation and interruption insurance, medical evacuation coverage, emergency travel medical insurance, baggage delay coverage, and missed connection coverage, policyholders will also benefit from cruise-related benefits like cruise disablement coverage, which pays out if you're unable to access water, food, power, or restrooms for a certain duration onboard. Policies and claims can all be easily managed via a mobile app.

8. Nationwide

If you're planning a cruise, you could do a lot worse than considering Nationwide for your travel insurance. With three different cruise insurance plans to choose from, each of which covers common issues like missed connections and itinerary changes, along with coverage for the weather, work emergencies, terrorism, and school session changes, it makes an excellent choice. It also offers a good range of policies for other forms of travel. All policies are backed by Nationwide itself, which is one of the most reputable and financially stable insurers on the market.

7. Travelex Insurance Services

Travelex Insurance Services offers two main plans - Travel Basic and Travel Select - that can be easily tailored to suit your exact requirements via a wide assortment of optional add-ons. For travelers who are planning a short, domestic vacation, the Travel Basic plan offers an excellent solution. In addition to covering 100% of the trip cost for cancellations and interruptions and up to $500 for trip delays, it also offers up to $500 in coverage for lost, damaged or stolen baggage, $15,000 in emergency medical and dental coverage, and $100,000 in emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. For international travelers or adventure vacationers, the Travel Select plan (which is the only one of the two with an adventure sports option) makes the preferable choice. It includes $50,000 in emergency medical and dental coverage, $500,000 in emergency medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, and up to $1,000 in coverage for lost, damaged or stolen baggage and personal effects. Children under the age of 17 are covered for free if traveling with an insured adult.

6. Geo Blue

If you already have standard travel insurance for things like lost luggage or missed flights (if you have a credit card, check your policy - there's a good chance you're covered) and are purely looking for medical coverage, Geo Blue makes an excellent choice. It offers a wide range of policies that cover both pre-existing conditions and various needs at a very affordable price point.

5. InsureMyTrip

Named as one of the best travel insurance companies on the market by Investopedia, InsureMyTrip is a travel insurance comparison website that allows users to pick and customize the best policy for their needs from over 20 insurers using one intake form. Sign-up is easy, and filters let you search based on specific criteria like increased medical coverage, higher limits, and adventure sports. All of the insurers affiliated with the site are reputable and financially stable, which means there's less chance of you being caught out.

4. HTH Worldwide

HTH Worldwide isn't the cheapest provider, but its excellent medical coverage makes it a very sound option, especially for seniors up to the age of 95 who are looking for comprehensive protection and flexible options. Travelers with existing primary insurance policies are covered for 100% of the costs of hospital stays, including tests, surgery, office visits, and prescription drugs outside the US. Its trip interruption and baggage coverage isn't much to write home about, but if you're more concerned with medical benefits than travel ones, it's well worth considering.

3. IMG

IMG offers a huge variety of travel insurance plans, along with several very attractive medical insurance plans for business and recreational travelers. One of their most popular plans for frequent fliers is the Patriot Travel Medical Insurance plan, a 24 month, renewable policy for individuals, groups, or families that covers medical expenses, evacuation, and repatriation up to $1 million. They also offer various add-on options, such as the Adventure Sports rider, to allow for a customized approach.

2. Allianz Travel Insurance

As US News notes, Allianz Travel Insurance offers a selection of 10 travel insurance plans intended to suit different traveler needs. Its most popular plan is OneTrip Prime, which, amongst other things, offers trip interruption coverage up to $150,000, trip cancellation coverage up to $100,000, up to $1,000 in baggage loss, theft or damage, and emergency medical coverage for $25,000. Children under the age of 17 are covered for free if traveling with an insured parent or guardian. In addition to purchasing coverage for an individual trip, you also have the option to buy an annual travel insurance plan, making it a great, convenient option for frequent fliers. A 24-hour hotline is available in case of emergency, and both the policy and any claims can be managed online and via the mobile app.

1. World Nomads

World Nomads are a global travel insurance provider that makes the task of buying coverage and filing claims from wherever you are in the world easy. The types of coverage available depend on where you live (US citizens, for example, can purchase coverage that offers protection against costs associated with overseas medical care, trip cancellation, acts of terrorism, and baggage damage or loss) but the range is comprehensive enough to cover most eventualities and needs, including options for extreme sports and adventure vacations. All policies are underwriting by financially reputable insurers like Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, AIG, Generali Global, and Lloyd’s.
