10 Things You Didn't Know about Glovo CEO Oscar Pierre

Oscar Pierre

Oscar Pierre is one of the two co-founders of Glovo. For those who are unfamiliar, Glovo is a Spain-based business that purchases the products ordered by its clients before delivering them to said individuals.

Currently, Pierre is the one serving as the CEO, thus making him the one with the most influence over the business's operations. What Are 10 Things You Didn't Know About Oscar Pierre? Here are 10 things that you may or may not have known about Oscar Pierre:

1. Comes From Barcelona

Pierre comes from Barcelona, one of the most famous cities in Spain and beyond. It is interesting to note that Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, which is one of the autonomous communities that make up the Kingdom of Spain.

Based on the name, it should come as no surprise to learn that modern Catalonia shares very similar borders with the historical Principality of Catalonia, though there is a notable exception in the form of Roussillon that is now in France.

2. Studied At Georgia Tech

Naturally, Pierre studied in his native Catalonia. However, he went on to study in the United States as well, with his choice of school being Georgia Tech. Said school was founded for the purpose of building an industrial economy in the American South following the American Civil War, which is why it started out training nothing but mechanical engineering. Nowadays, Georgia Tech offers a wider range of programs, but it is still very much focused on science as well as on tech.

3. Trained in Aerospace Engineering

In both cases, Pierre studied aerospace engineering. Said field is focused on aircraft as well as spacecraft. As a result, it can be separated into two major branches, with aeronautical engineering focused on aircraft and astronautical engineering focused on spacecraft. This is a huge change from earlier times when aeronautical engineering encompassed the entire field, but it was also a necessary change when humans started venturing out into space.

4. Interned At Airbus

For a time, Pierre interned at Airbus. Of course, Airbus would be an European multi-national that is best-known for making airliners but has a wide range of other offerings as well. In fact, the corporation has not one, not two, but three major divisions, which are focused on commercial aircraft, helicopters, and a mix of military aircraft with spacecraft.

5. Has Founded Other Organizations

Pierre has founded other organizations besides Glovo. For instance, he founded an organization called Zikkomo, which seeks to combat poverty in Catalonia as well as Malawi through education. This is a sensible approach because education opens up new opportunities for those who are educated, thus empowering them in their efforts to secure a better life. Furthermore, higher levels of education have been known to be correlated with better outcomes in health as well as a wide range of other measurements of human wellbeing for a very long time. There is still considerable room for argument over whether the relationship is causal or not thanks to the involvement of a lot of other complicating factors, but there are definitely a lot of experts who believe it to be so.

6. CEO of Glovo

As stated earlier, Pierre is one of the co-founders of Glovo who has gone on to become its CEO. It isn't uncommon for entrepreneurs to handle the running of their own revenue-earning operations, but it also isn't uncommon for entrepreneurs to entrust that sort of thing to a chosen executive who specializes in such matters. Considering the success that Glovo has had, Pierre seems to be handling his CEO responsibilities well even if he came from an aerospace engineering background rather than something more stereotypical for senior executives.

7. Runs an International Corporation

Glovo is very much an international corporation. For proof, look no further than the fact that it operates throughout much of Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the EMEA region, which refers to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Suffice to say that running an international corporation is much more challenging than running a business that just operates into a single jurisdiction, not least because that means that interested individuals have to learn the laws as well as other relevant topics in every market that they have set up shop in.

8. Not That Many Employees

Having said that, while Glovo has extensive reach, it doesn't actually have that many employees. Instead, Glovo gets much of its manpower through independent partners, who outnumber its employees by a considerable margin. This makes sense because it wouldn't make much financial sense for Glovo to hire that many people on a full-time basis, seeing as how it is very much an on-demand business.

9. Has Been Looking into Dark Kitchens

It is interesting to note that Pierre and the rest of Glovo's leadership have been putting considerable resources into setting up dark kitchens. For those who are curious, dark kitchens are a concept that is being pioneered by Glovo as well as a number of other companies in similar fields. Essentially, dark kitchens can come under a number of other names such as ghost kitchens, virtual kitchens, and delivery-only restaurants, all of which are meant to describe how they make food for delivery and nothing but food for delivery. They are very much a product of the rise of food delivery services in the same manner as how dark stores are a product of the rise of grocery delivery services.

10. Very Focused on Profitability

Throughout the entire time, Pierre has had a huge focus on profitability. This makes sense for a number of reasons. For example, Glovo's core business doesn't actually have very high profit margins, meaning that a focus on profitability is needed to ensure that its revenue-earning operations can continue on for the foreseeable future.

Likewise, profitability is what brings in further investors, which in turn, enable businesses to expand much faster than otherwise possible. On top of this, it should be mentioned that delivery services are very, very common, meaning that a focus on profitability is needed to provide the edge with which to overcome those competitors.
