Tips on How to Leave a Discord Server
Have you ever heard of something called a Discord server? If not, you may be wondering exactly what this is. Even if you aren’t aware of its existence, there is every chance that your children are. In fact, Discord has become increasingly popular with teenagers, often used by them as a way of staying in touch and keeping up with things that they are interested in. If you want to know more about it, as well as potential safety issues involved with using it, keep reading. More importantly, you may be wondering how to leave a Discord server. Rest assured, that topic will be covered as well.
What Is a Discord Server?
Discord can best be thought of as a social media platform with a twist. They operate servers that allow people to access what amounts to subject-specific social media platforms they operate through voice, chat and text. In many cases, people have to receive an invitation in order to join a particular group. However, that isn’t always the case, such as when widespread video game releases are discussed. In short, you might think of Discord as something similar to Twitter, with its own chat room thrown in. However, there is a major difference here. As previously mentioned, this particular system operates through text as well. That means that the person using it can provide their personal contact information if they so choose. As opposed to directly messaging a person through the app, it is possible to contact people by calling them or sending a text directly to their phone. This opens up a whole new world of potential safety issues because it provides direct contact information. Granted, the person involved doesn’t have to provide that information, but the judgment of someone who’s only thirteen or fourteen years old isn’t always the most cautious.
Potential Safety Concerns
As you might have already imagined, a server that makes it possible to directly contact someone is not the safest thing in the world. This has made Discord a favorite spot for predators, because they can pose as other children interested in the same things as your child and then try to get them to provide their contact information. Once they have that, it’s virtually impossible to control what they send over your child’s phone. For someone who is tech savvy and wants to put in a little time and effort, it can also provide other personal information such as your home address. As such, it has become a breeding ground for people that prey on children. There has even been an issue with these individuals sending pornography to young teenagers because it is almost impossible to successfully moderate this type of system. While moderators do exist and strive to keep that type of thing away from this platform, it can be up for hours or even days before anyone is able to get to it. Unfortunately, it’s also become quite a popular place for kids to bully other kids. The fact that they can get someone’s personal contact information in order to call or text them to continue the bullying only makes it worse. In short, Discord is not unlike the most negative aspects of Twitter, on acid. The platform itself can be toxic enough, not to mention the fact that it doesn’t always end when the individual in question logs off. If that’s not enough to concern you, blocking someone’s number isn’t always enough to get the job done, either. In some cases, it’s necessary for the affected individual to change their phone number entirely in order to put it into the abuse.
How Do You Leave a Discord Server?
If you find that your child has joined a Discord server that isn’t what they thought it was, it is possible to leave that server permanently. However, it is a four-step process to get the job done. The first thing you need to do is log on. Next, look in the top left-hand corner and tap the icon that has three lines. This will give you list access to all of the servers that you subscribe to. Once you have found the server that you want to stop using, click on it. You can also click on the three dots that are next to it. As far as the server itself is concerned, it doesn’t matter because you can access it through either method. When you click on it, a menu should pop up that gives you an option to leave that particular server. Click on that button and then confirm your choice. Once you have confirmed it, you should be removed permanently from that particular server. Therefore, it should no longer show up on your list, nor should you be able to access it. After you have left a particular server, individuals won’t be able to contact you through chat or through the app unless they have already obtained your personal contact information.
If they have, you may have to take further steps such as blocking them individually from your phone or even changing your number in order to stop unwanted messages from coming through. At the end of the day, Discord servers can serve a purpose. The theory behind their existence is that it gives people who have similar interests an opportunity to come together as an online community. That’s wonderful if you have a child who is interested in singing, yet none of their close friends sing. They might have an opportunity to connect with other people who have similar interests through Discord. However, Discord is similar to other forms of social media in the fact that anything and everything can be posted. That means that it isn’t always used for its intended purpose. The thing that sets it apart is that part of its foundation is the ability to provide personal contact information. While you can certainly do that on other social media platforms, it isn’t encouraged as much as it is on Discord. That fact alone should make parents wary of allowing their children to use it.
