There are so many different types of commodities out there. At times, it may be difficult to think of various liquids as a commodity, but it’s actually fairly normal. Even water has become one of the biggest commodities in the world. However, it’s the most obscure and rare of liquids that sell the most. You might be surprised at what they are, but these liquids come in small packages but sell for tons. Some examples of expensive liquids include blood, insulin, mercury, and even printer ink. Out of all the different types out there, here are the five most expensive liquids in the world.
5. Chanel No. 5 – $26k per gallon
When we’re talking perfume, there’s nothing more iconic than Chanel No. 5. It’s one of the most widely known fragrances in the entire world. The fragrance was produced in 1922 and was created by popular designer Coco Chanel and French-Russian chemist and perfumer Ernest Beaux. The idea behind the perfume was transparency. Chanel wanted to do away with all the prissiness of the perfume industry back then, and the result was the clean lines of the Chanel bottle and the clear liquid. The bottle has gone through changes before it became the iconic squared bottle that it is now. The bottle itself and the perfume has become a symbol in pop and art culture over the years.
4. Horseshoe Crab Blood – $60k per gallon
Horseshoe crabs are those animals that wash up on shore that look completely ancient and from out of this time. They have large bodies that are covered with a tough exoskeleton and a tail that’s protruding from their backs. Horseshoe crabs resemble exactly what their name implies: horseshoes. They’re rarely seen on shore, and their harvested blue-colored blood is even more expensive. Over 50 years ago, someone discovered that horseshoe crab blood responded uniquely to various bacterial toxins. When its collected in large quantities, it can be used in the medical industry to test various medical products to ensure there aren’t any contaminations.
3. Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) – $123k per gallon
Everyone knows that LSD’s were the popular hallucinogenic/psychedelic drug from the 60s. It’s more commonly known as acid, and it worked to alter someone’s awareness of his or her surroundings, perceptions, and even feelings. It was a prevalent recreational drug back in those days, but some have even used it for spiritual reasons. The drug isn’t typically addictive, but it causes delusions, anxiety, and paranoia. It became famous in the music industry during the psychedelic rock ages. It also had huge influences in art, literature, and film cultures. In 1971, the use of the drug became illegal in countries that participated in the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances. However, enforcement of this law varies in consistency.
2. King Cobra Venom – $153k per gallon
We all know just how poisonous King cobras are. They are some of the deadliest animals on the planet, and everyone knows that if you come across a cobra, you might be in big trouble. The venom of a cobra has the capability of killing a full-grown elephant, making it the most poisonous snake in the entire world. However, as much as cobras are known for killing, their venom has found use in modern medicine in many other ways. The venom contains a protein known as ohanin. Today, ohanin is used as a painkiller that’s more potent that morphine—about 20 times more potent. It can be useful if used appropriately, but still quite deadly if used in a wrong way.
1. Scorpion Venom – $39 million per gallon
Scorpions are another group of deadly animals in the planet, and they use their venom to kill their prey and fight against predators. Against humans, there are 25 different species of scorpions whose venom could be deadly. However, the very same venom could be quite useful when administered properly. Scorpion venom contains a protein that can be useful in the treatment of pain from various illnesses such as MS (multiple sclerosis), inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. You only need small doses of scorpion venom to be effective, which is great considering that it’s very expensive to use, especially as regular treatment.
