The Oceanco Lumen is a Superyacht For the Ages

Oceanco is a business that specializes in building yachts. To be exact, it is a business that specializes in custom building super-yachts that measure more than 80 meters in length, which tend to come with costs measured in the millions and millions of dollars. One of Oceanco’s current projects is the Lumen, which met with a positive response at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

What Is the Oceanco Lumen?

At this point in time, the Lumen is little more than a concept that has been turned into a model. Still, its reception at the boat show suggests that it is a concept with a fair amount of potential, which becomes understandable when one examines the information that has been revealed so far.

Like its name suggests, the Lumen has been designed around the concept of light. Its single most notable feature is its Sun King Diamond Coating, which has seen previous use on a number of vehicles such as jets and sports cars. Made out of diamonds extracted from ethical sources, the coating promises to provide the super-yacht with a shimmering surface that is sure to captivate the senses. However, it should be mentioned that the other elements of the Lumen have been designed to complement said coating so as to enable the overall creation to live up to its name in the truest sense possible.

For example, the super-yacht will boast a tubular elevator made using a combination of glass and stainless steel that extends for a full five decks. Part of the elevator’s purpose is practical in nature, but it should be noted that it will contribute much to the super-yacht’s overall look as well. After all, it is supposed to be surrounded by a floating staircase, which should provide the perfect place to look out upon the scene. Something that is particularly important because the setting has lights installed to create an artificial nightscape at night, while on the outside, the surface of the ship is expected to create an effect that is just as spectacular through the light of the stars reflecting off of the water. Finally, the whole structure of the ship is supposed to make extensive use of materials such as reflective metals and transparent materials, which should enable it to show off its most stand-out elements to the best effect.

On a more practical note, people might be interested to learn that once it has been completed, the Lumen is expected to be capable of holding a total of 36 guests. Furthermore, it was designed by a Californian designer named Adriel Rollins, which should provide interested individuals with a place to start looking if they are interested in more information about what they can expect from the super-yacht. Otherwise, it might be interesting to note that the Sun King Diamond Coating was a collaboration between a diamond specialist named Jean Boulle Luxury and a paint specialist named AkzoNobel, which makes sense considering its intended purpose as well as the material from which it was made.

What Else Is Oceanco Doing?

With that said, it is important to note that the Lumen is not the sole super-yacht that is being built by Oceanco at the moment. For example, Oceanco is also working on the Y718, which is another super-yacht that will measure more than 100 meters in length that is expected to be completed sometime in 2018. Working on more than one such project is not unusual for Oceanco, seeing as how it possesses the capabilities needed to build multiple examples of super-yachts at the same time.

In fact, Oceanco actually went through an expansion in 2008 to improve its ship-building capabilities. What happened was that it purchased some of the land that sat adjacent to its ship-building yard, which was then cleared of existing buildings and land improvements so that it could expand its existing capabilities. As a result, Oceanco became capable of not just building five super-yachts at the same time but also building super-yachts that measure up to 140 meters in length. Considering the sheer size of such ships, this is no mean accomplishment.

Regardless, the Lumen is far from the point when it can be launched into the waters. However, as Oceanco begins building the actual ship, it seems probable that more information will come out.
