A Closer Look at The Ulysse Nardin Freak S Watch

Ulysse Nardin Freak S Watch

Ulysse Nardin launched its Freak in 2001. It was a brilliant work of horology the likes of which the world had not seen before. It capitalized on a simple modern material called silicon, Ulysse Nardin found an innovative use of the heat-resistant polymer. The Freak was a disruptor in the watch world. Two decades later, the watchmaker determined it was time to release a new model in the collection. It’s following the latest trend in upscale luxury watch themes, finding its place in the horological space race.

The Ulysse Nardin Freak S Watch at a glance

Monochrome reveals the new complicated Freak S with its space-inspired design as an evolution of the model that made its debut more than two decades ago. As the reality of space travel continues to unfold with non-astronauts piercing through the earth’s atmosphere to the fringes of outer space, the brand follows suit with an inspirational piece that sparks the imagination further. The Freak S has a visual impact with its twin oscillators in the shape of a UFO. It takes us deeper into the space age with horological advances and the visuals to push us further. Ulysse Nardin is known for its experiments and this may be one of its greatest successes. It carries us forward in our quest for knowledge and adventure as we move past previous limitations to achieve feats of greatness.

The watch dial appears as a 3-dimensional sculpture on a mechanical platform. It’s protected with a case of 18k rose gold with black titanium with DLC coating creating a two-tone color theme in a width of 45 mm. It’s a large watch, but a smaller version couldn’t do justice to the magnificence of the space theme. The previous version has a top bezel that unlocks by lifting a small tab at the 6 o’clock hour marker. There is no crown to the side on Freak models. Instead, time can be adjusted via a turn of the top bezel. It’s an interesting process that was solved in the S model with a crown on the back of the case. the watch is water-resistant up to thirty meters. A Blog to Watch staff point out that the strap is black alligator and calf-leather in gold tone that shows through the perforations cut horizontally in the vertical line. Just a few more details to add to the luxury and complexity of the timepiece.

Ulysse Nardin and silicon technology

Silicon technology is nothing new to Ulysse Nardin. Naysayers didn’t believe the material was suitable for creating watch movements, but Ulysse Nardin proved them wrong. They’ve been using it in the components of the Freak for over twenty years. silicon is a durable material that has proven to be successful in high-end luxury timepieces, contrary to previous beliefs. Ulysse Nardin went against the tide and engineered escapements and large balance wheels of silicon material. It’s present in the current edition of the Freak as well. The silicon components include synthetic diamond covering for strength and durability.

The movement

The Freak S is powered by an in-house automatic movement called the caliber UN0251. It’s crafted with two balance systems that run at a frequency of 2.5 Hz, or 18,000 vibrations per hour. The power reserve is 72 hours. It’s a sophisticated and complicated movement with gears and regulators that compensate for errors in timekeeping to enhance precision. The hype over the movement has been built because of its beautiful construction that gives onlookers something to talk about. Ulysse Nardin took it over the top with its design details, the decorative plate in aventurine that creates a starry sky background, and the central components of the movement, shaped like a spaceship. UN’s Grinder automatic winding mechanism in the back is a novel yet useful and practical feature. There is so much about the design and aesthetics that makes us step back and admire its form and function.

Final thoughts

The Ulysse Nardin Freak S is a continuation of the Freak collection of luxury watches launched in 2001. Twenty-one years later, the Freak S arrives to add another personality to the brand’s unique and novel collection of watches with a space travel timepiece that thrills the senses. At first glance, you can see it’s different. Its uniqueness is apparent and draws you in for a closer look. The team at Ulysse Nardin has gone all out to produce a wristwatch that bears features we’ve not seen in any other earthly timepiece. They omitted the crown in earlier models but thoughtfully installed a Grinder in the exhibition case back that allows you to adjust the time if necessary. It’s unclear if this limited edition model will be the last in the Freak Series or if others will follow. It’s going to be tough to top the innovations of the Freak S, but if anyone can do it, Ulysse Nardin will. Examples of the Ulysse Nardin Freak S will become available sometime in 2022, with just 40 of the 75 scheduled for production slated for release. We assume that the remainder of the watches will follow in the year ahead. If your heart is on adding the Freak S to your collection, it’s wise to contact Ulysse Nardin for further details.
