Hader was born in Oklahoma on June 7, 1978. He did not really enjoy school and struggled to fit in, preferring to spend his time reading and watching movies. At high school, he appeared in a school production, and he enjoyed making short films with friends. Although he wanted to progress to a film school, his poor grades meant that he was unable to gain admission. So, he chose the alternative route od attending The Art Institute of Phoenix and then Scottsdale Community College. During that time, he worked as an usher at a movie theater, so he could watch films for free. While at college, he met director Nicholas Jasenovec, with whom he later worked.

Hader dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles in 1999 as he dreamed of becoming a filmmaker. He initially struggled to find employment, but he later landed a job as a production assistant. During his time in this role, he worked on a documentary and several major films. One of these films was the 2002 movie ‘The Scorpion King’. According to Wikipedia, a bad experience during the making of this film led Hader to give up working as a production assistant.

Next, he worked as an assistant editor at a production facility, and he used the money he earned to make a short film, although he did not release it. Feeling like he needed a change, he started taking comedy classes and met fellow comedian Matt Offerman, who is the brother of actor Nick Offerman. The duo formed a comedy group called ‘Animals of the Future’, along with Mel Cowan and Eric Filipkowski. Actress Megan Mullally is Nick Offerman’s wife. When her husband told her about the group, she went backstage at one of the group’s gigs. Impressed with what she saw, Mullally recommended Hader to Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live.

His Career from 2005 to 2013

Hader’s breakthrough came when he made his debut as a featured player on SNL in October 2005. He soon became known as the ‘impressions guy’, with some of the people he impersonated including Harvey Fierstein Keith Morrison, Rick Perry, Al Pacino, Charlie Sheen, and John Malkovich. While working on SNL, Hader also began a career in film. His film debut was the 2006 movie ‘You, Me, and Dupree’. Other films in which he starred while working on SNL included ‘Knocked Up’, ‘Hot Rod’, ‘Superbad’, ‘The Brothers Solomon’, ‘Adventureland’, ‘Paul’, ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’, ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, ‘Pineapple Express’, and ‘Tropic Thunder’.

Furthermore, he also provided a voice for many films during this period. These included ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ and its sequel, and ‘Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur’. He also provided a voice for various television series, audiobooks, and video games. At the same time, Hader took on several roles behind the camera. For example, he worked as a producer and creative consultant on ‘South Park’, he co-wrote and starred in the web series ‘Crackle’, and he wrote a one-off Spider-Man feature called ‘The Short Halloween’. He then had his first leading man role in the romantic comedy film ‘Trainwreck’ opposite Amy Schumer. This then led to him getting another romantic lead in the film ‘Maggie’s Plan’. In 2017, Hader provided the voice of Alpha 5 in the film ‘Power Rangers’.

Following several years focusing on film work, Bill Hader returned to television in 2018 when he co-created the series ‘Barry’ with Alec Berg. Hader also stars in this series as well as producing, writing, and directing the dark comedy. He has received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his various roles in this series. In both 2018 and 2019, he won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Despite the success of this series, Hader also wanted to continue appearing in films.
