In 1994, Gowdy received a prestigious appointment as an assistant United States Attorney under the US Department of Justice. After six years, Gowdy left the Attorney’s office to run for the 7th circuit solicitor, defeating the then solicitor, Holman Gossett. He maintained the position for three terms, leading a team of 65 employees.

Gowdy appeared in legal documentaries such as Forensic Files and persecuted numerous high-end cases, including bank robbery, narcotics trafficking, and child pornography. He received the Postal Inspector’s Award after prosecuting J. Mark Allen, among the fugitives featured in American’s Most Wanted TV show.

As a federal prosecutor, Gowdy earned a high rating two years in a row. He was recognized nationally as a committed activist, protecting the victim's rights and handling death penalty prosecutions excellently. One of his biggest legacies was enacting a Drug Mother Protocol to help pregnant women overcome addiction.

Gowdy’s political career began in 2010 when he vied for the United States House of Representatives and was elected to represent South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He won the congressional seat against Bob Inglis, the incumbent Republican congressman and Democratic nominee Paul Corden.

In 2012, Gowdy ran for re-election and emerged victorious against Democrat Deb Morrow. Similarly, in 2014 and 2016, he was elected for his third and fourth terms defeating Libertarian Curtis McLaughlin and Democrat Chris Fedalei, respectively.
